Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream, by Hunter S. Thompson

Maverick author Hunter S. Thompson introduced the world to "gonzo journalism" with this cult classic that shot back up the best-seller lists after Thompson's suicide in 2005. No book ever written has more perfectly captured the spirit of the 1960s counterculture. In Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, Raoul Duke (Thompson) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (inspired by a friend of Thompson) are quickly diverted to search for the American dream. Their quest is fueled by nearly every drug imaginable and quickly becomes a surreal experience that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. But there is more to this hilarious tale than reckless behavior-for underneath the hallucinogenic facade is a stinging criticism of American greed and consumerism.

Amazon.com Review
Heralded as the "best book on the dope decade" by the New York Times Book Review, Hunter S. Thompson's documented drug orgy through Las Vegas would no doubt leave Nancy Reagan blushing and D.A.R.E. founders rethinking their motto. Under the pseudonym of Raoul Duke, Thompson travels with his Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo, in a souped-up convertible dubbed the "Great Red Shark." In its trunk, they stow "two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers.... A quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls," which they manage to consume during their short tour.

On assignment from a sports magazine to cover "the fabulous Mint 400"--a free-for-all biker's race in the heart of the Nevada desert--the drug-a-delic duo stumbles through Vegas in hallucinatory hopes of finding the American dream (two truck-stop waitresses tell them it's nearby, but can't remember if it's on the right or the left). They of course never get the story, but they do commit the only sins in Vegas: "burning the locals, abusing the tourists, terrifying the help." For Thompson to remember and pen his experiences with such clarity and wit is nothing short of a miracle; an impressive feat no matter how one feels about the subject matter. A first-rate sensibility twinger, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a pop-culture classic, an icon of an era past, and a nugget of pure comedic genius. --Rebekah Warren

Review
'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a scorching epochal sensation. There are only two adjectives authors care about any more - 'brilliant' and 'outrageous' - and Hunter Thompson has a freehold on both of them' Tom Wolfe

From the Inside Flap
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the best chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever committed to the printed page. It is also the tale of a long weekend road trip that has gone down in the annals of American pop culture as one of the strangest journeys ever undertaken.
Now this cult classic of gonzo journalism is a major motion picture from Universal, directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. Opens everywhere on May 22, 1998.

The American Dream
By Quinn Quarantine
I admit that I only read the book after seeing the movie when I was younger, and even after hearing the song by Avenged Sevenfold "Bat Country", but this story changed a lot about the way I think. "The American Dream" is the theme of this adventure story (though I use the term adventure in place of "drug binge fueled blaze across Nevada), and two unlikely companion take their wild "trip" to the heart of Nevada: Las Vegas to find the dream and write about it to bring home. This story is very crazy to be honest but it is time and time again one of my favourite stories. If you are into half truth and half fiction stories where it is hard to draw the line between what could have really happened and what exactly was fabricated you will enjoy the wild ride Thompson will put you through in Fear and Loathing. It has twists and turns and bizarre events at every turn. It will keep you enthralled and engaged and you can buy a ticket to take this ride safely from the comfort of your home.

A book that should not be read by anybody, ever.
By Alex Bush
Fear and Loathing is one of the great classics of American journalism (literature?) and IMO the definitive book for developing an understanding on American drug culture in the late 20th century. The book is hilarious and horrifying, a piece of narrative genius both disrupted and enhanced by the author's instability and grotesqueness. More than anything it captures the ambivalent draw of a life on the edge -- with the exhilaration and freedom displayed alongside the self-loathing and despair. Thompson was both the most disgusting of men and the most empowered, and Fear & Loathing is perhaps the most enduring display of this strange mixture. And like all good anti-hero's narratives, there's a powerful sense of voyeurism strewn throughout. I found myself drawn in by a powerful sense of vicariousness, and even more powerfully repulsed.

I'm not sure if anything can be "learned" from such a book or if could be called an intellectually enriching experience, but it's certainly a culturally enriching one, and a sturdy landmark of American journalism that's unlikely to lose it's relevance -- or it's appeal -- anytime soon.

Very Close To The Edge
By MICHAEL G. KARBY
It's Hunter S. Thompson's masterpiece of Gonzo journalism, wherein the narrator is moving and participating within the action of the tale as it unfolds. It's a really fun book to read if you did drugs when you were a youngster and were a bit of a rebel in your youth. Thompson's use of language is a delight in itself, which is probably the real reason why he was able to make a living as a writer, and it is a rather timeless piece of one paranoid's survival of a long, lost weekend, where the poor soul "strayed very close to the edge." While being "timeless," the narrative can only be fully appreciated by a reader who knows the music of Jefferson Airplane, who once took too much LSD at some time in the past, and who now safely can re-read a easily flowing tale from a roller coaster lover, who briefly escaped from his straight jacket long enough to leave us an absurd tale of excess and debauchery --- and excess it was.

Read it, since it's hot!
By Miss Betty
You need to read this now! There. I've said it.

This is the first, of what I'm certain, will be a long and successful series. It's a brand new twist on the oldest fight around. This I not Dan Brown's Angels & Demons, that's for sure. The main characters, Trinity & Malachi, draw you in and before you know it - it's 3a and your going: "but when's the next one coming out?!?!" There's a little bit for every genre fan; romance, fight scenes, drama, intrigue, steamy love scenes, and an underlying good v evil plot.

I highly recommend it, and look forward to the ext installment!

Good Beginning to a New Series
By Katyz
I must begin with saying that I did enjoy this book, and would recommend reading it. The main characters Malachi and Trinity have a refreshing mystical and instant connection. This connection is written such that it keeps one reading to find from where it stems. The secondary characters support the story line, and their interactions create several avenues that one hopes will lead to more stand alone books in this series.

The only problem I have with this book is the use of tenses. The book switches from first person, to third person and back again, sometimes within only a paragraph or two. This seems to be heavier in the beginning and gets better the farther along the book goes. Usually, this would stop me from reading a book since I find it very distracting. However, the story line was enough to get me to over look this, and I kept reading until the end.

In conclusion, I suggest buying this book, and personally will buy the next in the series.

Intriquing!
By Louc54
I have not read anything in this genre for 35 years as they all seemed to so repetitious and formulaic with no real plot and undeveloped characters. This one, however, had all of that and more. I loved the use of lore and legend that this author used and it was developed so richly that I didn't know if I was reading fact or fiction. That for me is a definition of a good read.

It was very imaginative and the plot and sub-plots made this one a real page-turner. I'm very much looking forward to the next one.

IPv6 Fundamentals: A Straightforward Approach to Understanding IPv6, by Rick Graziani

To support future business continuity, growth, and innovation, organizations must transition to IPv6, the next generation protocol for defining how computers communicate over networks. IPv6 Fundamentals provides a thorough yet easy-to-understand introduction to the new knowledge and skills network professionals and students need to deploy and manage IPv6 networks.

Leading networking instructor Rick Graziani explains all the basics simply and clearly, one step at a time, providing all the details you’ll need to succeed. Building on this introductory coverage, he then introduces more powerful techniques that involve multiple protocols and processes and provides hands-on resources you can rely on for years to come.

You’ll begin by learning why IPv6 is necessary, how it was created, and how it works. Next, Graziani thoroughly introduces IPv6 addressing, configuration options, and routing protocols, including RIPng, EIGRP for IPv6, and OSPFv3. You’ll learn how to integrate IPv6 with IPv4, enabling both protocols to coexist smoothly as you move towards full reliance on IPv6.

Throughout, Graziani presents all the IOS command syntax you’ll need, offering specific examples, diagrams, and Cisco-focused IPv6 configuration tips. You’ll also find links to Cisco white papers and official IPv6 RFCs that support an even deeper understanding.

Rick Graziani teaches computer science and computer networking courses at Cabrillo College. He has worked and taught in the computer networking and IT field for nearly 30 years, and currently consults for Cisco and other leading clients. Graziani’s recent Cisco Networking Academy Conference presentation on IPv6 Fundamentals and Routing drew a standing audience and the largest virtual audience for any session at the event. He previously worked for companies including Santa Cruz Operation, Tandem Computers, and Lockheed.

Graziani provides straightforward understanding.
By M.B. Reynolds
The title of the book is an accurate depiction of the contents of this work. The material is presented in a straightforward, methodical manner. The material is presented with understanding and teaching in mind utilizing repetition, sample code, examples, and review. The book is primarily a walk through the various Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Requests for Comments (RFC) that comprises the aspects, features, and options of IPv6. Most of these RFC walkthroughs are accompanied with Cisco IOS example code for setting up a router to implement the RFC. After some of these examples, output from a packet sniffer demonstrates the changes to the packet headers. The book finishes with mechanisms for implementing mixed IPv4 and IPv6 environments and approaches to transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6. Additional references and notes point the reader to more details or topics not covered by the book. Overall I certainly recommend this book as a starting point into IPv6 if the reader has some IPv4 and routing experience. I believe for the novice an additional more general book on networking should be digested first.

The book covers the Internet history and the motivation of IPv6. The IPv6 headers and Extension headers are presented in (again) a straightforward explanation with plenty of diagrams and tables. This explanation includes the specific differences between IPv4 and IPv6 headers. A nice overview of IPSec headers includes authentication, transport, and tunneling modes.

One of the most substantial changes from IPv4 to IPv6 is the addresses and their types. After introducing hexadecimal and the address format short hands, Graziani explains well the structure of the new 128-bit address: prefix, subnet, and interface id. Chapter four outlines the multitude of unicast, multicast, and anycast address types. The Neighborhood Discovery Protocol is a new feature of Internet Control Message Protocol version 6 (ICMPv6). Graziani shows ICMPv6 with its enhancements is an important change in how IP hosts identify themselves and others hosts and routers on the network.

The middle of the book discusses IPv6 configuration and routing. Initially, a router is configured from scratch with the various address types. The same example configuration and network is nicely used through the middle of the book. This method is useful for continuity and context. Building on this initial configuration static routes and routing tables are built. The old and new RIPng, EIGRP, and OSPF are compared and contrasted in Chapter 8. The middle ends with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol version 6 (DHCPv6). The new features such as stateless & stateful DHCP and relay agents are covered. Some interesting differences in Domain Name Service (DNS), TCP, and UDP are explained.

The book ends with mixed IPv4 and IPv6 environments. Graziani shows dual stack allows for parallel IPv4 and IPv6 networks. He covers tunneling methods such as 6to4 and ISATAP that allow for IPv6 packets to be encapsulated in IPv4 packets and routed through an IPv4 network. He shows this allows for a smooth transition from IPv4. Finally Network Address Translation IPv6 to IPv4 (NAT64) is walked through. He shows this allows and IPv4 address to be mapped to a IPv6 address and vice versa to allow coexisting IPv4 and IPv6 networks to communicate.

After trying others - THIS is THE BOOK!
By John Scott
The review written by Cosmic Traveler says it well. I purchased 2 other books before this one and they both ended up on the bottom shelf of my bookshelf. I ordered this one and I couldn't put it down. If the mere thought of a 128-bit address represented in hexadecimal format makes your hair stand up, you need to order this book and then go have a glass of wine - or a cold beer.

The Eclipse Graphical Editing Framework (GEF) (Eclipse Series), by Dan Rubel, Jaime Wren, Eric Clayberg

As Eclipse-based applications become increasingly popular, users are demanding more sophisticated graphical interfaces. When standard widgets aren’t enough, graphics built with GEF are often the best solution. The Eclipse Graphical Editing Framework (GEF) covers everything Java tool developers need to create tomorrow’s richest, most visual interfaces.

This practical, hands-on guide begins by introducing GEF, Draw2D, and Zest, and demonstrating what can be achieved with them. Next, the authors walk through building a simple Draw2D example, helping new GEF developers understand the core capabilities available to them. Building on this foundation, they progressively introduce more of the Draw2D frameworks, including Figures, Layout Managers, Connections, Layers, and Viewports. They present a chapter-length graph visualization project based on Zest, followed by detailed coverage of non-Draw2D portions of GEF.

The book’s final section walks step by step through developing a complete GEF editor. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of the problem, and includes challenges, solutions, diagrams, screenshots, cookbook-style code examples, and more.

This book is organized to help developers solve immediate problems quickly, while also gaining in-depth knowledge for building advanced solutions. Relevant APIs are included in several chapters, making this an even more useful standalone reference.

This book

  • Introduces GEF application components such as shapes, flow, logic, and text
  • Explains Draw2D architecture, drawing features, and event processing
  • Shows how to create and customize figures, use painting and borders, and work with each Draw2D Layout Manager
  • Thoroughly explains GEF models, including domain and presentation information, populating diagrams, and more
  • Shows how to use Zest’s content providers, filters, and layout algorithms
  • Covers EditParts, EditPolicies, Tools, Commands, Actions, and much more

The Eclipse Graphical Editing Framework (GEF)

is the best resource for all Java tool developers who want to construct sophisticated graphical editing products that integrate with Eclipse, for experienced Eclipse users who want to start creating their own graphical tools, and for anyone who wants to see what makes GEF tick.

Insufficient; utterly fails to explain GEF
By Stefan Mücke
This book is a good introduction to Draw2D and Zest, but unfortunately NOT to GEF. Like most articles and tutorials about GEF, this book fails to explain the complexities of GEF and make them easy to understand and use. It does not even make a reasonable attempt at discussing the concepts behind GEF. For those interested, I will elaborate below (after the lists) what concepts the book should have described but did not.

The book is written as a tutorial that develops a genealogy editor. In the first part about Draw2D, the authors do a great job in starting with a minimal solution and refactoring it as they add more features. This part is well written and easy to follow. Also, whenever a new Draw2D feature is introduced, the authors describe the various capabilities of Draw2D (e.g. the existing layouts, figures, anchor types, etc.). However, Draw2D is the easy-to-understand part of GEF, and most developers won't need a book to get started.

After Draw2D, the authors describe Zest, which is an extension to GEF that offers JFace-like viewers. I have skipped this part, because I am interested in editors, not viewers.

When it comes to GEF, the authors almost give up at explaining. They mostly describe their code as if observed through a debugger, without drawing the conceptual lines between the invocations. You will find sentences like this (p. 236): "When the user selects an element, the layout EditPolicy [...] for that element's container is found and the createChildEditPolicy(...) method is called." The book does not mention or explain any of the following:

(1) what EditPolicies have to do with layout
(2) when and why EditPolicies are looked up
(3) what a ChildEditPolicy is and why it is needed
(4) why an EditPolicy creates another EditPolicy when it usually creates Commands

After reading the book, I am left with the impression that the authors barely managed to implement the example editor themselves. Also, I cannot imagine that they were involved in the development of the (quite sophisticated) graphical editor that is part of WindowBuilder(tm) of their company Instantiations (acquired by Google). In fact, the editor was originally developed by Konstantin Scheglov and then bought by Instantiations. Konstantin Scheglov continues to be the chief architect and technical lead after WindowBuilder was donated by Google to the Eclipse foundation.

=== What is good ===

- concise wording; no repetitions
- easy to follow in the Draw2D part (and maybe the Zest part)
- starts with a minimal implementation and refactors it as new features are introduced
- develops a single example editor throughout the book

Regarding Draw2D:
- nicely describes zooming and how to do pixel-perfect rendering at zoom levels > 100%
- nicely describes the difference between composing figures of other figures and implementing your own rendering
- nicely describes layers and scrolling
- describes how selection feedback can be customized

=== What is bad ===

- does not explain how GEF works
- only 267 pages (including index), not 312
- the index is a fake; mostly class and method names
- the References section at the end of each chapter almost always refers to the same resources

=== What is missing ===

Regarding GEF, this book can be better characterized by what is missing than by what is not. It does not cover any of the following topics:

- how event handling works in GEF (different from Draw2D)
- how Tools and Requests work (two of the most central things in GEF)
- the different states an editor can be in
- how to use GEF's default layers and how to add your own
- does not explain an EditPart's life cycle
- does not explain an EditPart's activate/deactivate methods
- how drag-and-drop works and what a DragTracker is
- showing temporary/auxiliary elements (e.g. guide lines)
- showing a grid
- showing rulers
- implementing snap (e.g. snap to grid, guides, or figures)
- how feedback works and how to implement custom feedback
- printing
- should have listed Requests created by the various Tools
- how to use the command stack

There are no advanced topics or goodies, like e.g.
- animating figures
- using text figures (TextFlow etc.)
- customizing the keyboard behavior
- performance and memory considerations; scaling; visualizing huge numbers of elements/figures
- whether lazy EditPart creation is possible
- doing complex custom layouts
- dynamically adapting the rendering (e.g. showing more or less details depending on the zoom level)
- implementing non-scrollable (fixed) figures

Here is my view of what the book should have explained:

A graphical editor interacts with the user and must therefore interpret mouse and keyboard events. Besides rendering, this is the core of a graphical editor. In GEF, most of the event processing is done by Tools; a Tool in GEF is not a button on a button bar. The behavior of the editor depends on which Tool is currently active, and in which state it is (for example, when the mouse button is down, mouse movements will be interpreted differently).

In GEF, Tools do not usually implement the editing behavior themselves. Instead, they only interpret the events and create Request objects that describe the intended user action (e.g. select, move, resize an element). These Request objects are then used to obtain Command objects (containing the code that acts on the model), show feedback (e.g. during a drag operation), or perform some other operations. This is where EditPolicies come into play. Instead of implementing the same behavior again and again for different graphical elements, GEF provides a mechanism that allows certain behavior to be attached to elements (i.e. to EditParts). All this should have been explained in great detail, with some nice diagrams making it easier to follow the complex control flow.

There are many more things that need to be explained. However, Tools are the starting point where learning to implement the editing behavior should begin, IMHO. Once you understand Tools and Requests, GEF becomes much easier to use. Discovering this (when learning GEF the hard way) was my "Eureka!" moment after which everything suddenly seemed easy. This "Eureka!" knowledge is what I would have expected from a book about GEF.

Terrible - Not for beginners of Eclipse and GEF
By Adym S. Lincoln
Having read a book on Eclipse before and written a couple of non graphical plugins, I thought this book would close the gap on learning the GEF framework. I was sadly disappointed. The book spends a great deal of time on developing a Graphical View, devoting only a few chapters on an actual Editor. The worst part is, those chapters on Editors are so terse and devoid of details, you're left with swimming thru the source code to try and understand concepts. In the end, without a broad understanding of GEF to begin with, you will not learn GEF. The book is NOT for beginners. I think the book was written by GEF developers with a focus on junior GEF developers that work for the Eclipse Foundation.

Hope this helps,

adym

Great for beginners
By Dr. Fraggenstein
As a novice Eclipse developer, this has been my go-to resource for GEF. I found that this gave me a great introduction and I would recommend it to anyone else.

Not one word on human waterside evolution
By Marc Verhaegen
Very extensive and complete book on primate and human evolution, richly illustrated, but like many textbooks on human evolution, it uncritically follows the popular, but illogical and now outdated view that quadrupedal apes evolved into bipedal humans by leaving the African forests for the plains (although primates that go from the forest to the plain typically become less vertical, the so-called "baboon paradox"). It takes for granted a lot of unproven assumptions: that australopithecines are human ancestors to the exclusion of chimps, bonobos and gorillas; that chimps, bonobos and gorillas could not have had more bipedal ancestors; that Pleistocene human ancestors ran over open African plains (sweating water + salt = scarce on savannas); that our ancestors became bipedal by leaving the African forests for the plains; etc.
This book about human evolution does not mention once that non only the forests and the plains, but also the water shaped ape and human evolution:
a) Australopithecines and apes: Virtually all australopithecines have been found in wetlands at the time (swamp forests, lagoons, papyrus swamps etc., e.g. Reed 1997), where they - not unlike today's lowland gorillas wading in forest bais for aquatic herbaceous vegetation (AHV, google e.g. Ndoki gorilla) but more frequently - waded upright for sedges, frogbit, floating vegetation and hard-shelled invertebrates, and also climbed arms overhead in the branches above the swamp (google e.g. aquarboreal). Pan and Gorilla knuckle-walking evolved in parallel during the cooling and drying Pleistocene from such bipedally wading ancestors, and all African apes still regularly or occasionally wade on two legs in forest swamps in search for shallow aquatic and surface foods such as waterlilies or sedges.
b) Pleistocene Homo: During the last two million years, archaic Homo dispersed intercontinentally, not running over dry open plains as popular accounts of human evolution still assume just so, but following the African and Eurasian coasts and rivers, beach-combing, diving and wading bipedally for littoral, shallow aquatic and waterside shellfish (which had to be opened with stone tools) and other foods rich in brain-specific nutrients (google e.g. researchGate marc verhaegen).
This "littoral dispersal model" (Munro 2010) is corroborated by a lot of recent papers, e.g.
-J.Joordens, S.Munro cs 2014 Homo erectus at Trinil on Java used shells for tool production and engraving, Nature doi 10.1038/nature13962,
-M.Verhaegen, S.Munro 2011 Pachyosteosclerosis suggests archaic Homo frequently collected sessile littoral foods, HOMO J.compar.hum.Biol. 62:237-247,
-K.Reed 1997 Early hominid evolution and ecological change through the African Plio-Pleistocene, JHE 32:289-322,
-S.Munro 2010 Molluscs as ecological indicators in palaeoanthropological contexts, PhD thesis Univ.Canberra,
-J.Joordens cs 2009 Relevance of aquatic environments for hominins: a case study from Trinil (Java, Indonesia), J.hum.Evol. 57:656-671,
-M.Gutierrez cs 2001 Exploitation d’un grand cétacé au Paléolithique ancien: le site de Dungo V à Baia Farta (Benguela, Angola), CRAS 332:357-362,
-K.Choi, D.Driwantoro 2007 Shell tool use by early members of Homo erectus in Sangiran, central Java, Indonesia: cut mark evidence, J.archaeol.Sci. 34:48-58,
-S.Cunnane 2005 Survival of the fattest: the key to human brain evolution, World Scient.Publ.Comp.
-M.Vaneechoutte cs eds 2011 Was Man more aquatic in the past? eBook Bentham Sci.Publ.
-P.Rhys Evans cs eds 2013-2014 Human Evolution conference London May 2013 proceedings, special editions Hum.Evol.28 & 29.
Unfortunately, this textbook virtually completely neglects these recent insights in ape and human evolution. A missed opportunity.

"The Definitive Testosterone Replacement MANual presents practical information about the best ways to maximize benefits and minimize side effects of testosterone replacement therapy. It accomplishes this goal in the most visually appealing way I have ever seen in this field. This book makes for an enjoyable and highly empowering read for any man who wants to take charge of his health and quality of life."

Nelson Vergel CEO, ExcelMale.com and DiscountedLabs.com, Author of Testosterone A Man's Guide: Practical Tips For Boosting Physical, Mental and Sexual Vitality

Are You Living Life At Your Maximum Potential?

Is your sex drive at its peak, or has it diminished? Is your enthusiasm for life lessening?

Healthy testosterone levels are not only a physical state of prime health, but a mental state of positive wellness and aggression.

A man with low testosterone will experience not only a physical decline, but also a diminished quality of life.

Testosterone is often misrepresented by the media at large as inciting "hostility", or its effects are reduced down to building muscle only, and its portrayed as being detrimental to health. Nothing could be further from the truth. Comprehensive clinical evidence has unequivocally demonstrated that healthy testosterone levels not only slow the aging process and improve physical markers of health, but that they also reduce the possibility of degenerative disease, and by extension vastly improve quality of life.

Men NEED Optimal Testosterone Levels to age powerfully and live to their maximum potential.

The Definitive Testosterone Replacement Therapy MANual is the first book of its kind covering not only the therapeutic practice and application of TRT, but the historical, sociological, and biological issues that inform its usage.

With this manual, you will learn:
  • The history of testosterone, and the modern narrative that influences its use and prescription
  • How to assess your own testosterone levels, and make medically supported decisions at improving your hormonal health
  • The science of TRT gathered from ample research data made understandable, and how it influences broad spectrum
  • Diet, training, and lifestyle guidance that will support your revitalized way of living

This is THE Definitive Testosterone Replacement Information Resource!
By Calvin P. Poole, Jr.
This book is well written and fact filled. It gives suggestion and recommendations for testosterone replacement therapy that are excellent. It does not go into the scientific portion with relatively useless information, such as drawings of the hormones, the number of methyl groups, etc. If the advice in this book is used, I can almost promise that you will feel better and make many more advances in your appearance, your mood and, in general, how you face the world and live life.

That being said and hopefully you will considering buying this book, I am going into my background. I am a doctor and a board-certified Ob-Gyn. I am studying to become certified in anti-aging medicine at this time. When I finished residency in 1984, a large part of our knowledge base was endocrinology, especially in relationship to the sexual hormones including testosterone as well as estrogen and progesterone, which people usually consider the female hormones. For example, did you know that the usual post menopausal woman, say of sixty three will have a higher testosterone than her husband of the same age?
Your testosterone starts falling about 1% a year on the average starting at age 30 (ages of peak testosterone vary from source to source from 20-30). If you have had a high testosterone level and it drops to a much lower level, you can become symptomatic, even though your tests will show a low normal testosterone level. This is not an all or none situation. Do you really think that if your level is say 275 and the cut off for a low level is 270 that you do not would not benefit from therapy until your level gets to 269? Each lab is different and the one I just checked for a normal range is 270-1070.
I became depressed when I hit about 40 and after several years of being on SSRI's, and gaining weight (read getting fat) and not having the urge to work out or actually do anything, gaining about 70 pounds with a decrease in muscle mass, (so who knows how much fat I really put on) I continued to research since I got NO results from the medications or therapy. I found an old medical paper that said that testosterone therapy was effective in the treatment of depression in older males. I then found a paper that gave a comparison and it showed that testosterone therapy was much more effective than SSRI's. I got my levels done and I had a very low level of testosterone. I started replacement therapy and have lost weight and no longer have problems with depression.

Now back to the book. Most MD's do not like to start testosterone replacement therapy, since that is "part of getting old". This was a NoNo, even in the 70's. I do not agree with this since your quality of life suffers and you are miserable. Some worry that TRT can cause heart attacks or strokes. There was one flawed study that showed this, whereas there are many studies that show the exact opposite.

If you are considering replacement therapy get this book and get a copy for your doctor, because this has more practical advice in it for TRT. After my training and back ground, I personally like to know the chemical make up of the hormones and the degradation, etc., but most do not.

Jay is very knowledgeable in the area of TRT. I have not found any mistakes in the information that he presents. I have never met him, although I have communicated with him online. I was surprised at his grasp of TRT which is much deeper than most doctors that I have talked with and after discussions with him, I have made changes in my own TRT and have benefited from them. I highly recommend this book both for men interested in TRT as well as all doctors that treat adult and elderly males.

In full disclosure, I did receive a copy of this prior to publication, free of charge, and did not receive any thing in return for my review. I have nothing to gain or lose from this review and don't even know Mr. Campbell. If I had not thought so highly of this book, I would have stated it or not reviewed it at all.

In order to "put my money where my mouth is" I did purchase this to give to my own doctor. I just needed to explain how I was able to get a review out as quickly as I did on the day of release.

I felt like a completely different person
By Jeremy
After serving in the 75th Ranger Regiment for a number of years and going through a few of the toughest schools the military has to offer; I felt like a completely different person. The rigor to succeed that I had before was gone. My competitive edge started to go away. I was known as one of the more physically fit members in my unit and it was all just going away. Even weirder was the fact that I didn't really care. I was now becoming ok with not being the best.

I knew after Ranger School It would take awhile for my body to heal up. After all, I recycled mountain phase twice and was there for almost half a year (got caught in best ranger comp). I graduated and returned to things as normal assuming after a few months everything would start to become normal. But it was the last straw for my body. After deploying and being around so many blasts, Ranger School seemed to be the last straw the broke my body. After reading the information in this book and arguing with every doctor ever since they all told me "I was too young to have that problem", and 6 months after graduating I finally get my testosterone checked. It came back at 26ng/dl. I was 23 years old at the time. It explained the complete change in who I was and the fact that I couldn't even get a hard on. AT 23 YEARS OLD.

I followed recommendations as outlined in the book and talked to my doctor about TRT. He was hesitant at first. Saying that it must have been a fluke cause of my age and had more tests done including brain scans. But I stuck with the amazing information this book informs you with and worked with my doctor to bring my levels up to where they should be. I brought the information from this book to my doctor, which luckily he was open to trying, saying he even learned some things (Most doctors ego's are too big to ever admit they learned from someone who doesn't have letters after their name). That proved for me that Jay really knows what he's talking about. Without the knowledge I got from Jay and his book I would have never been able to return to who I was.

I've seen it happen to so many of my friends from serving and now can show them the same information that literally GAVE ME BACK MY LIFE. I have since gotten out of the military and continue to use this book as an on-going reference to how to optimize my hormones and my life.

All I can really say is thanks to this book, THE REAL ME IS BACK

and after all that they still often feel like s***. Many of these men just suffer from ...
By Adam L.
As I write this, this book has only been out for a few hours. I'm able to review it now because I was going to see my endocrinologist before the release date, had a bunch of questions for Jay, and rather than answer them all individually, Jay sent me a draft (and after I read it he still spent a half hour on the phone with me for free- what a guy!). Being a draft, there might be a few differences between this and the final copy available here on Amazon; I'll edit my review if necessary once I get my hands on the final draft.

TRT is a complicated subject, but Jay makes it about as understandable as possible. The point he drives home the hardest is that we live in a testosterone-deprived age. So many people are drugging themselves on SSRI's in an effort to keep from being depressed, Nootropics to stay alert and focused and, most commonly, boner-pills to keep their sex-life going...and after all that they still often feel like s***. Many of these men just suffer from low testosterone. "Low" doesn't always just mean out of range, but sub-optimal, and optimal can vary by the individual. Just because you're "in range" doesn't mean you're at optimum health. Optimizing this declining hormone can be an effective way to treat all of these symptoms by simply controlling the levels of a hormone your body should be making naturally anyway!

"The Definitive TRT Manual" takes much of the mystery and confusion out of this subject, and there are lots of advanced tips and cautions in bang-boxes for those who want extra detail or tips. He goes into detail about how the risks are over-villified and how the benefits are under-appreciated, which options he prefers and why, as well as how to monitor and control any side-effects, such as high red-cell count, in order to optimize health. You can tell Jay invested an enormous amount of time in this product. This book looks like it was illustrated and edited by a major publishing house; I had text books in college that looked less professional than this!

I don't have much in the way of criticisms. Ways to find a good, affordable, local TRT doc (or to talk to your primary doc) would be nice, but are somewhat outside of the scope and highly variable; he also recommends a tele-medicine clinic on his page. I'd like to learn more about HCG monotherapy, which he recommends you pursue first, but that's not exactly TRT so also somewhat outside of the scope (and the Q&A at the end suggests he may've added additional info on this in the final draft). I'm also interested in information about whether TRT will permanently effect my ability to naturally produce T after long term use (say, your natural level drops from 400 to 275 after stopping TRT). I spoke to Jay about this on the phone and he feels it is pointless to worry about as you wouldn't go on TRT to begin with if your natural levels weren't already making you miserable, so there's never a point in stopping. Fair point, but s*** happens and I'm still interested in learning more about long-term effects.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. It's concise, professional, detailed and still easy for a layman to read. Had I discovered it sooner I could've saved myself dozens of hours of scouring the internet. $20 to save all that time and confusion is a bargain. Five stars.

Pretty good read
By Timothy T
It's a good read answering most questions you might have about the behind the scenes shenanigans. I thought it was brutally honest. In many cases, he also interviewed others from the cast who gave their side of different stories. As others mentioned, there's a good bit of time spent discussing how unhappy Reed was, which I thought everyone knew about, but the stories about his fights with Reed bring it home. Where it loses a point or more for me is the extended ending of the book where each episode plot is explained. Some episodes have one, two or no stories about the episode or things happening behind the scenes. What would have made this fun would have been having at least a few stories for each episode? I almost put the book down during this part but stuck it out.

GREAT BOOK with episode info too!
By Rita Harris
GREAT read! Especially if you are Brady obsessed like me. LOVED LOVED the mini-reviews he does of every episode!!!! Lots of tid bits and trivia I didn't know. Also loved reading the scathing memos Robert Reed served to Sherwood Schwartz that Barry includes in their entireties! Gems!

Entertaining Read for Brady Boomers!
By Paige Turner
Honest and candid, Barry Williams gives us a funny, entertaining viewpoint of growing up as Greg Brady of "The Brady Bunch." What I like about this book is that he tells of his start in show business, then details life as part of "The Brady Bunch". He expresses amazement that people still love and want to see the Brady Family which resulted in several made-for-TV Brady movies with the old cast and the hilarious Brady Bunch movies with Shelly Long as Carol Brady. Of course Williams describes his crush on Maureen McCormack as well as other Brady Kid pairings once the cameras stopped rolling. It must have been frustrating for him and for the other actors portraying the Brady kids because most of them were not like their characters at all, yet the public expected them to behave that way. Can you picture that Thweet Little Thindy (Susan Olsen) is now a hard-drinking woman? Williams tells of them swapping Brady stories over drinks on an airplane. The only thing I didn't like was at the end of the book, a synopsis of each Brady Bunch episode was included to plump up the book. While that info might be useful for die-hard Bradyphiles, I would have preferred that Williams give us more anecdotes about his life as Greg Brady or better yet, life after Greg Brady, since the bulk of the book is focused on the Brady Years.
