About the Author
Jim Sheeler is a reporter at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver. He won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing for the story "Final Salute." An expanded version of that story is scheduled for publication by The Penguin Press in 2008. He previously contributed to the book "Life on the Death Beat," (Marion Press). He lives in Boulder, Colo. with his wife, Annick, and son, James.

An Obit Collection Meant to Be Savored

Jim Sheeler notes in his introduction: "The death beat is supposed to be the worst job in the newsroom. For those of us who understand, it's journalism's best kept secret -- a place of raw emotion and endless wisdom, a place where you find lessons of life more brilliant that anything you'll find from the traditionally designated 'noteworthy' people who usually appear in the rest of the newspaper." I've been writing obits for years, yet after reading this book I now aspire to cover the death beat like Sheeler does -- with compassion and grace.

The deceased are the main focus of each chapter, but Sheeler is there too, buried in the spaces between each inked line. A master wordsmith and medium, he has the uncanny ability to give a voice to ghosts and record their legacy. Read this collection, and you too will hear the whispered tales of nurses and bartenders, pilots and farmers, mountain makers and carousel caretakers.

Take your time, though. "Obit" is simply too rich to read in one sitting. This collection of "inspiring stories of ordinary people who led extraordinary lives" is meant to be savored. As such, I devoted the last half hour of each day to a different deceased man or woman, then carried their stories into Morpheus' realm. There they inspired my dreams. And when I woke up, hours later, the dead were alive once again, filling my mind with thoughts of love, loss, courage and generosity.

Pulitzer Prize-winning feature writer Jim Sheeler presents Obit: Inspiring Stories of Ordinary People who Led Extraordinary Lives, an anthology of brief yet heartwarming portrayals of men and women who led energetic, compassionate, sometimes humorous, always shining lives. Each biographical portrayal is only a few pages long - yet that is more than enough space to expand beyond the traditional printed obituary and reveal the wonder, the color, and the personality infused into each individual's unique life. Obit is ultimately an anthology celebrating life, not death, and an emotionally moving read whether explored a few pages at a time or all at once.

Review from an obit writer

I started a job as an obituary writer last September and immediately researched books on obits to study before I started the job. This was my favorite out of all of them because it focused on ordinary people, showing how amazing they were in their life roles even though they didn't become famous or do something that went down in history.

That's the takeaway from this novel--every single person has a story and their own little piece of history, memories they made and the fond ways they'll be remembered by those they touched along the way. It opens your eyes to see others you pass along, maybe in the grocery store or on the sidewalk, and think, "I wonder what they do?" For my job, it helped me pick out little bits of someone's life that may not seem that incredible at first, but when explored can be the turning point in a story, the thing that makes others want to read about them. Highly recommend this book and hats off to Sheeler for great writing.

What a beautifully written collection of poems

I must say I have really enjoyed the poems I've read thus far. Anna Journey has an expansive mind and knows how to use it. The texture and layering of the poems is really well done and I got this feeling of nostalgia for the beginning of the poems once I reached the end. It was like each one is built on its own mini relationship. Anyone who enjoys contemporary poetry should give this book a gander.

Adams, assistant professor of English at Columbia University, explores this common critical perception of the "freak" including, over the centuries, carnival performers, people with physiological disabilities, hippies, people who blur gender conventions and people from radically different, non-Western cultures as distorted visions, or metaphors, of viewers' inner fears. In this wide-ranging, wonderfully imaginative and often startlingly provocative analysis of U.S. representations, displays and marketing of "otherness," Adams exposes the dark side of the mainstream. Documenting the traditional sideshow with sensitivity and shrewd examples, she expands into such diverse phenomena as Carson McCullers's use of "freaks" as a metaphor for nonconformist sexuality in Member of the Wedding, Diane Arbus's disturbing photography and the treatment of freakishness in Toni Morrison's Beloved. Step right up, See the In-Depth Gaze, Hurry Hurry

Recently I've read through a few books on sideshows and freaks (sort of side resarch for my next novel). Most are skimming histories of people and events. Adams has created something altogether different. Drawing on poststructuralist techniques, Barthes, theories of the leisure class, and methodologies of deconstructing narratives of the other (what "freak" would do all this!!??) she pursues the notion of freaks from appropriated nomenclature to social constructs, to name a couple avenues. You want to understand Browning's movie, then this is the essay.

Her research drew upon many sources, often comprehensive, at other times less than complete. The problems are minor, some people in photographs or freaks who wrote about their positions are not mentioned, or a name might be missing in the index, or a photo clearly dated 1885 in the picture is listed as 1903. And on a broader level I suppose she could be faulted for falling into the same trap she critiques, that of denying her her subjects voices (kudos for mentioning Gayatri Spivak but what would she say about this?)

But don't misread my finicky carping. This is an excellent book and one I'd recommend above all others I've seen for digging into our individual and collective psychologies. Read it and learn why the freaks say, "Gooble Gobble Gooble Gobble, we will make you one of us."

Where was the sideshow?

I wanted to like this book; I really did. The synopsis on Amazon was intriguing, and the subject matter had already captured my imagination. But rather than having the snap and sparkle of a sideshow, this book read like a leaden lecture, more suited to a grad school classroom. I found myself re-reading some sentences four and five times. Why didn't a good editor get ahold of this book and pare down the dense and sluggish passages that show up on every page? History and criticism don't have to feel like a visit to the dentist; they can read like a trip to the beach, and still get the point across. Kenneth Tynan and Bruce Catton come to mind...

While the book contains much interesting information, I just don't think the destination is worth the trip. It's not that I'm dense; I have a master's degree myself, and I have read plenty of advanced textbooks. It's just that a book on sideshows should bring a certain amount of the magic and wonder of those shows to the reader, instead of feeling pretentious and cold. A good opportunity missed; you'd be much better served reading Marc Hartzman's "American Sideshow" or Joe Nickell's "Secrets of the Sideshows," both available on Amazon, and worth your money. But skip this one unless you just have to have every book on the subject, or you want an example of how not to write a book.
