Deadly Intent

In Deadly Intent Misty Evans gave me a whirlwind of action, suspense, and romance. Nelson and Sophie have a past, and now they have a present together too...but will they have a future together?

Nelson and Sophie's past is interesting, and the feelings still swirl around them when they are together, as much as Sophie in particular doesn't want them to. She has her own end goal and passion, one she keeps secret even from Nelson. Although Sophie was a difficult character at times to understand and get to know, I had to admire her strength and determination. Sophie did not come across as a team player, but she'll have no choice where Nelson is concerned! I really liked Nelson. He has a job to do, orders to carry out, but for Sophie he bends them, he goes with the flow (even if it is dangerous), and does what he believes to be the best thing to do given the circumstances. He hasn't forgotten the past either, and despite of it, he still wants Sophie...not only to be safe, but for himself. Can he have both though? Or either even?

There is a lot of conflict, tension, and danger in Deadly Intent. Enough to keep me on the edge as I read, hoping that Sophie and Nelson could find resolution not only for the case they are working on but for themselves. As I read Deadly Intent the plot felt like it could be real, and the danger felt very real! The passion between Nelson and Sophia fills the pages, and the issues these two have are believable.

There are quite a few secondary characters and some of the background is easier to understand if you have read the previous books in this series by Misty Evans (Southern California Violent Taskforce) who are easier to understand if you read the previous books in this series. Lexi, who is the villains sister, adds some extra emotional depth to the plot too.

Deadly Intent is fast paced and easy to read, and I'd recommend it and this series to any romantic suspense reader.

Great romantic suspense with a lot of action and a bit of an edge

Another great romantic suspense from Misty Evans. With a slightly darker edge, this book starts with action on the first page and doesn’t stop until the end. The romance, like the overall story, was a bit dark and edgy, and worked nicely with the undercover operation and past history Nelson and Sophie share.

I loved the fact that Sophie was a total bad-a$$. She definitely knew how to take care of herself but...her need to do things by herself all the time was really frustrating. I understood her motivation, especially as it related to her sister, but boy did I want her to take the help that Nelson offered. I liked seeing the more human side to her as well, watching her take care of her “boss's” little sister Lexie, and her insistence that she not become a casualty in the gang war her brother has created.

Nelson was just an awesome hero. He so wanted to follow the “one bitten, twice shy” mantra with Sophie, but he couldn’t deny he wanted her and I loved that no matter what, his loyalty to her never wavered – especially as challenging as she could be and some of the things she was involved with. I loved his honesty and willingness to do what he needed to, and of course all of that being wrapped up in one sexy, skilled, alpha male didn’t hurt either!

There was no lack of chemistry between Nelson and Sophie, and that chemistry seemed to spill over in to their working together – despite Sophie’s efforts to keep Nelson out of her “case”. The edge to their relationship was perfect for the danger they were in and I just knew Sophie wouldn’t be able to deny Nelson, especially once she admitted that she might need him.

I loved the plot of the story. It had a very real feel to it, and it seemed to be something that I might expect to read about or see in a breaking news update. Again, the whole book exuded a dark and dangerous edge, and it totally worked. There was minimal involvement from the SCVC Taskforce, but they were there when needed, and I loved the way some of their other cases were tied into this one. I also loved the ending, watching the SCVC Taskforce members outside of the job, being more like a family than a group of highly specialized agents.

This is a great story for anyone who likes a romantic suspense with lots of action and a bit of edge. Deadly Intent will not disappoint!

The Annals of Fulda' are the principal narrative source written from a perspective east of the Rhine for the period in which the Carolingian Empire gave way to a number of successor kingdoms, including the one which was to become Germany. Timothy Reuter's translation of the Annals and his accompanying commentary is now back in print, making accessible in English the history of this east Frankish kingdom, which due to the paucity of available written material and the scarcity of secondary writings has been a relatively neglected area.

The text covers the period from the last years of unitary Frankish rule under Louis the Pious up to the end of effective Carolingian rule in east Francia with the accession of Louis the Child in 900. It does not confine itself to high politics, but also includes much material of interest for social and ecclesiastical history. Drawing on the latest scholarship, Dr Reuter places 'The Annals of Fulda' in their full historical context, pointing to those things the authors of the Annals chose not to record or could not know about, as well as exploring the fascinating insights that are offered by the material.

Valuable book for those interested in 9th century Europe

I have been an avid history student for at least 50 years and the 9th century one of my favorite areas. This book is a very readable translation with useful notes. I consider it one of my best buys in this area of history and am happy it has been reprinted even though it wiped out the value of my copy. if you have any interest in the history of 9th century Carolingian Europe, particularly East Francia this book is essential. It provdes a year by year report on what the recorder considered important and the translator's notes help one understand the context and other sources that effect the original information. Sadly I understand Tim Reuter has died and there will be no more books from him.

A classic, but dated

This book is a classic, but it's from another era.

On the plus side, it was one of the first books to recognize that programmer-hours are not interchangeable, that some programmers perform as much as 10 times faster than others. It gives a lot of attention to the ways a corporation can accommodate this variation, and still deliver complex projects on time.

On the other hand, the book views software as monolithic: a great edifice that must be designed up front and then built from those specifications. In today's world, we have come to realize that software is a living thing, it constantly morphs as time progresses. The "Agile" software movement is focused on the idea of providing software that does something useful very early, then building upon it bit by bit.

The Marx Brothers made some classic movies in their day, but nobody makes movies like that any more. I'd say this book falls into the same category, even the anniversary edition.

Interesting case study

The first half of the book is a case study of the development of OS/360 in the 1970s: what the problems were, what was tried, what worked and what didn't. While I (and probably many others) snicker at the state of technology then compared to what it is now, I feel that the lessons Brooks learned (and happily relays to the reader) are still relevant and valuable. You certainly will have to abstract the methodology to the current technology we have today, but managerial lessons, as I said, are still relevant, mostly because people haven't changed that much. Basically, adding more people to already-late projects makes things worse. All of the communication and documentation that goes along with large projects are 100% necessary, and the documentation should be about 90% complete before coding starts. I think a wiki would solve both of these issues in one shot, but that's me. The last half of the book is mostly an inner dialogue by Brooks about what he thinks of the lessons he preached, what other people in the industry have said about his book, and his responses to it.

I think this is a definite must-read for anyone that programs on large software projects or manages large software projects. Brooks comes right out and says at the beginning that other engineering disciplines already know about all of the project management overhead, which I agree with, because I am in one of those other disciplines. Apparently the programming people don't see it necessary to teach project management as part of a bachelor's degree program, which might explain a lot of the larger programs in the past few decades. I have to admit though, the entire computer industry, both hardware and software, has been through a tumultuous and extraordinarily rapid history. Other disciplines have a much longer history book from which to reflect and design better processes, management or otherwise.

Finally, the prose is dry sometimes awkward, which I suppose is typical of the professor types with delusions of eloquence. Despite that, I thought it was overall an easy read, though not as humorous and engaging as some of the other software books I've been through.

The art of computer programming appears to have aspects that are not seen in any other known discipline. Large programs are more complex than small ones. A program twice as large as another is more than twice as complex. So, the management of program development is different than the management of anything else. This is the definitive book on the subject. Is everything in the book absolutely correct in every situation? No, but it's very widely applicable, and better than any other reference available. Is this book the last word on the subject? Probably not. But it has already stood the test of time, despite plenty of serious attempts to displace it over decades. And in most industry, even this book's most basic lessons have yet to be learned. In this volume lies the information to become and stay competitive.

This Book is a Wonderful Resource for the Church!

Shawn specializes in teaching theology of mission as part of the Intercultural Studies faculty at AIU (African International University) or more specifically NEGST (Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology) - a constituent school.

Though I know him personally, he has not asked me to write a review. I write on my accord primarily because I am inclined to think that all Christians (and cross-cultural missionaries in particular) should grab a copy of this book (Missiological Hermeneutics).

I think I would be truthful in saying that his book is not only an important and energetic work in its own right - but in many ways pushes beyond the borders of just `missiology' ("the area of practical theology that investigates the mandate, message, and mission of the Christian") or `hermeneutics' ("the art and science of text interpretation") into the everyday challenge of learning to be attentive to the Word of God in order to allow our cultural assumptions and normative interpretive lenses to be questioned and reshaped by the transformative work of the Spirit and the vocational mandate of Scripture.

The primary force of Shawn's thought is guided by the truth that the action of God is indeed breaking into this world in a variety of ways, not least of which through the Spirit's illumination of the text for any given person/group in any given context. Uniquely, Shawn seeks to incorporate the illumination of the Holy Spirit through communal and individual spiritual disciplines coupled with a careful culturally-appropriate contextualization of the text as the primary factors in this new missiological hermeneutic. He then employs his own method in very thorough engagements with `polygamy' and `Christian conversations with followers of Islam'.

Of particular interest to me were his initial few chapters in which he sought to understand whether the initial missiologically-shaped-promise of God (Gen 12) was understood and transmitted correctly, "meaning that they [the central biblical figures] put aside their own misconceived theological and missiological baggage and understood God's missional concerns." In other words, are we the only ones who miss God's concern/plan `for the nations' or did the central Biblical figures in this drama often miss it as well?

He continues, "I will suggest that one of our predominant means of understanding the patriarchs' interpretation of God's promise is to examine their retelling or reiterations of God's promises throughout Genesis, and, specifically, to consider how they repeated God's promise "to bless all the nations of the earth".

This is a very interesting interpretive move in my mind - to learn from the biblical figures themselves what a skewed missiological hermeneutic might look like - and the result that follows. In other words, as worded earlier, Shawn seeks to allow scripture to inform us of what a missiological hermeneutic of God's promises might look like and to subsequently embody for us appropriate attentiveness to - and involvement in - God's mission to His world.

I would do Shawn a great injustice by trying to summarize the remaining chapters or main points here - so without going much further, I want to point you towards a few other important parts of the book.

After his comprehensive conversation with the issue of polygamy - he continues to show how it is that `missional praxis' coupled with the Spirit's guidance might be able to shape our understanding of the direction of God's work in the world in itself.

In what turns out to be one of the most engaging parts of the book, Shawn dialogues with Kenneth Bailey (a biblical scholar who has studied and lived within Middle Eastern cultures for over 40 years) and J. Dudley Woodberry (a long-term missionary in the Middle East and missiologist at Fuller Theological Seminary). Both of these men are important in their own ways, but Shawn shows how they have learned to understand the meaning of scripture in light of their missionary activity and immersion in cultures very similar to various biblical contexts.

I will not discuss his findings here - though I assure you, he provides enough fruitful dialogue to chew on for some time.

With that said, though I have tried my best to engage his book critically and openly - I certainly can't find any particular aspect to critique, though I might say that there is an area that would help me greatly to see Shawn develop further (after having discussed this issue in person with him). This is the issue of communal or individual interpretation intentionally guided by spiritual disciplines.

As he has noted to me - it is an odd thing that students don't regard the Holy Spirit as a legitimate `helper' in intentional academic interpretation (though I suppose a number of people find it easy to use the Holy Spirit to back their own personal decisions). And perhaps this is precisely the concern. I have no doubt that a communal discernment process is scriptural (Acts 15) and can be helpful, but who determines which interpretation should be normative for a given context? The local people? The church? Futhermore, within the Free Church movement (which usually has the aspect of no authoritative teaching office) - who gets to decide which interpretation of a text is more truthful than others?

Though these questions go beyond the scope of Shawn's book - I have no doubt that his training and understanding would bring us a long way forwards as missionaries in learning to interpret scripture with/amidst the people with whom we work. Perhaps Shawn will see fit to write another book for us along these lines.

In all, I am deeply grateful for this book. If anything, it has not only strengthened my missiological understandings of Scripture, but has also increased my everyday reading of God's work in the world in and through others.

31 Spring Designs based on original watercolor artwork by Teresa Goodridge – printed one side of the page

[[VIDEOID:ad3c63753f87c422ce30050d750ee0be]]I own the two previous books in this series by Teresa Goodridge (Winter and Summer) and have found the Spring book to be an improvement over both. While the colored samples are still pictures of the original watercolor artwork rather than colored samples of the actual designs in the book, the problems with the tiny details (especially on faces) is much improved in this book. Details are more finished (less open ended, sketchy type details.) Coloring in it is easier as well as being able to use more types of coloring medium with larger nibs.

The designs are quite lovely with lots of spring themes. There are flowers, birds, outdoor scenes with fun activities like kite flying, walking in the part, riding bicycles, and shopping in an open-air market. The designs are quite detailed and do contain intricate and small areas to color. It is not a book that I would recommend to anyone with fine motor or vision issues.

I noticed that the feel of the paper is slightly rougher than other Creative Haven books I have ordered in this last six months or so. I like the new texture as it is even better for use with colored pencils.

This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium.

31 Spring inspired Designs

The designs are printed one side of the page

Paper is the usual Creative Haven quality: white, medium weight, slightly rough and has perforated pages.

Glue Binding but with perforated pages so removing a page is fairly simple.

The designs stop well before the perforations and each of the designs has a framing line at the outer edge.

Alcohol-based markers bleed through this paper

Water-based markers bleed through in spots and show colorful shadows on the back of the page

Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows of color on the back of the page. India ink pens can bleed through when I apply more than one layer of ink.

Coloring pencils work well with this paper and even better than many of the more recent Creative Haven coloring books I have bought. I was able to get good pigment (color) lay down, layer the same color and multiple colors and to blend easily using a pencil style blender. I tested both oil and wax-based pencils with similar results. Hard lead pencils, like Verithins, leave dents on the back of the page.

I suggest either removing pages from the book to color or using a blotter page under your working page. I like card stock as it keeps ink from seeping through and damaging the pages below.

loving the book

I just received my book today. I love it and can't wait to color the pages. There are 31 pages to color in the book. Out of the 31 pages there are 25 pages that I love. I have a lot of books and normally don't usually have that many pages in the whole book that I want to color. The pictures are on sheet alone. the sheets are easy to tear out. The sheets are thick enough that I will be able to use my sharpies.

This is a delightful taste of Spring. Some pictures are a bit detailed but most are just what you need to help pull you out of the doldrums. I'm aching for Spring to come and this is helping my mood. Pictures are beautiful and a nice variety of Spring scenes.
