Well written book within 500 pages. Dr. Ryan has done a great job in presenting the material without much mathematical details. A good reference for any one from industry and can be good text for University.

Alright book for college.

I used this book for Quality, Process, and Improvement class in college. It starts off with basic stat information like mean, standard deviation, but then jumps quickly into upper and lower limits. The learning curve on this book is high and I recommend you take a course with this book and not just read it your self, as it is an advanced book.

Inspirational!

It is my distinct pleasure to have read the first draft of Velinda Peyton's new book This River Called Life, A Letter to My Children. She writes in such a clear, informative manner and is inspirational in her encouragement of others to pursue their dreams. Consequently, I have started a business with my husband after reading her book because I also have found my passion. In addition, she tunes in so well to many of the longings we all have, in every aspect of our lives. One particular passage that moves me is her description of coming across a deer in a remote area of Colorado. Her description is so poetic and moving that I feel as if I am actually there with her in the moment. I often find myself wanting to reread certain passages because the writing is simply that good. Fantastic job, Velinda!

In today's society with all that's going on with unemployment, the housing market and the economy in general, this is a great book for people who may have lost their jobs, homes, etc. Not to mention an all-around good book for anyone seeking guidance on life in general. Good for the soul. Excellent book, and very well written. It's obvious that a lot of time and effort went into the research, and the entire book applies to everyday life, no matter where you are in life at this point. I would recommend this book to anyone. It makes so much sense!

As a parent and grandparent I was very much interested in the insights that Velinda offered.I am looking forward to sharing her thoughts with my children. The clarity with which she writes and the easy flow of the content in this book makes this a must read for those who struggle with with watching the the children of today heading on a collision course with disaster. Velinda has over come more and demonstrates clearly that as individuals we can do anything. Andy Veje

Very practical

It is easy to find good books about C# and Java. However, for many more specialized development tools it is hard to find a book that provides what a beginner needs. In many cases, a book thoroughly covers the language commands, but leaves the reader staring a a blank command line wondering "What, exactly, do I need to type to compile and run my program?" Bruce Smith's books do not fall into this trap. Smith provides not only the necessary coaching and instruction in assembly language for the Raspberry Pi's ARM processor, but also gives clear practical instructions for getting everything to work.

One of the reasons I bought the book is its introduction to the ARM vector floating-point coprocessor, a topic that often gets short-shrift from authors. If I had to pick one nit with Smith's book, he fails to mention a little trap with assembling coprocessor code. Smith starts the book using the GNU assembler "as" and then moves to using gcc later in the book, which is entirely reasonable. However, some readers might like to know that if you want to assemble vector coprocessor code with "as" rather than gcc you must include the command-line parameter "-mfpu=vfpv2".

Whether you are looking just to have some fun learning assembly language with your Raspberry PI or whether you view the PI as a stepping-stone to greater things ARM, Bruce Smith's book definitely belongs on your shelf.

I'm totally new to Raspberry Pi, Linix, and to Arm processors. This book is clearly written with easy to follow examples. I'm up to chapter 12 so far.

I bought the kindle edition and am reading it on my IPad. The formatting, pictures, and text flow are all superb.

Novel or True Crime?

The best true-crime books ("In Cold Blood," "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil") are models of research, craft, and psychological insight, and do not presume to be anything more. What makes the genre interesting is a teasing ambiguity which, in the hands of a master, can be richer than any novel's--and can deepen our understanding of motivation, memory, misapprehension--the nature of "truth" itself. But first a little modesty is needed.

"Wilkerson was totally honest, and would not tolerate being associated with dishonesty, impropriety, or poor judgment... If he quit the OSBI [the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation] now, at the apex of his career, he would maintain his credibility and reputation, thus being a more viable advocate. He made up his mind at that moment; he was getting out of the business. Some way, somehow, the public had to know the real story."

This trumpet fanfare is from page 226 of "Someone Cry for the Children," and the noble OSBI agent so described, in bluff third-person, is Mike Wilkerson, the book's author. (He co-wrote with his brother Dick, also an OSBI agent). Honest he may be, but that passage instantly made me question what he thinks he knows. What he (and any detective) ought to know is that most murder cases are extremely complex--this one more than most--with too many variables for anyone to claim a monopoly on truth.

We will never know what happened that night in 1977; Gene Leroy Hart, the full-blooded Cherokee fugitive accused (and acquitted) of the crime, could offer no credible account. Neither could some of the witnesses and experts who testified at his trial.

In a case like this--the gruesome sex slayings of three little girls at a Girl Scout camp--emotions naturally run high, and advocates become hardened in their positions. Wilkerson and his brother "know" the truth; so do Hart's supporters, who choose to remember him as a star athlete and handsome role model for Cherokee children in Mayo County. So what we have in "Someone Cry..." is a detailed but highly subjective account of a maddening case--touted as "unsolved...unexplained" in the jacket copy, but which the authors obviously consider closed. As the excerpt suggests, the book's veiled purpose is to lay out as convincingly as possible (in novelistic fashion) the OSBI's case against Hart. This agenda seeps quietly into every page. OSBI agents are described as "confident"; defense attorneys are "smug." Hart's private conversations with his attorneys are quoted and described (without attribution) in such a way as to discredit him. His guilty, "nervous" reactions to questions might, to another observer, have seemed like innocent indignation. Finally, the choice of details (such as a "low, guttural moan" heard on the night of the slayings) ties in very glibly with the authors' pet theory of Gene Hart's guilt.

The book has other flaws. Despite the title--which refers to how politics and other hoopla stole the focus from the victims--the murdered children and their families are virtually ignored here. We learn almost nothing about them. The authors don't even bother to get the oldest girl's name right--was it Denise or Doris Milner? (Toward the end we infer that Denise was her middle name). Amazingly, the authors never even tell us the date of the murders--just that it was "mid-June 1977." (There's a general laziness about dates throughout).

A blurb on the back of the paperback edition makes comparisons with "In Cold Blood." In a pig's eye. This book can't touch that one on any level--language, research, insight, objectivity. The portrait of Hart is about as deep as Injun Joe in "Tom Sawyer." Many of the other figures (mainly those connected with the defense) are shrill caricatures. Most annoying are the novelistic asides about Indian "medicine" and the magical efforts of a pseudonymous medicine man to ensure that divine justice is served. As it happened, Hart died of a heart attack a few months after his acquittal, and the authors (who, like many in the OSBI, have some Cherokee blood) imply that the Great Spirit snuffed him out for his crime.

And yet--despite the bias and sloppiness and corn--the Wilkersons succeed in building a case. The wealth of evidence against Hart is impossible to dismiss. To do so is to accept an O.J. scenario of planted evidence and pervasive corruption/racism in the OSBI. So why did the jury free him? Easy: they didn't. Hart was already facing 305 years on unrelated charges (kidnapping, rape, burglary). Setting him loose on society was never a possibility. Why send him to Death Row, then, and have to face the anger of his legions of rabid supporters? Jurors--humans--almost always take the easy route, then convince themselves it was right.

This book is above average for the genre; the writing is hardly inspired, but the Wilkersons know their subject thoroughly. (The careless omissions here and there may be the result of knowing it too well). The story is involving without ever descending to sensationalism. Still, the book does not haunt me the way it might have--had a real writer explored the case from its many, fascinating, hideous angles. This narrow little account left me with nothing but the belief that Hart was probably guilty. Very little light was cast into the blackness of his incomprehensible crime.

I know that I should highlight how good the mystery plot of Catch Me If You Can was, I know I should tell you that Caesar Romano and Dan Green are a perfect detective couple and that they will become the next magnificent duo, but closing this novel what most remains with me is the fun I had reading it.

Caesar Romano is the son of a typical Italo-American family, typical since, doesn't matter if you are a saint or a sinner, if you are family you are loved; and Caesar, Ce for his friends, knows he is loved and that gives him an attitude to life more than positive. He knows he will succeed in his career, and today's target is to land the job as Assistant Direct to the most important art gallery owner of NYC, Mallory Albright. For that reason he has perfectly planned the exhibition opening at his current gallery, and since the subject are naked marble busts, what is better than having the waiters serving cocktails with the upper half of their uniform missing? Everything is perfect until the moment Ce's former boyfriend, and in the closet actor, Shep, crushes the party, Ce's current boss starts to behave in a strange way and a former police detective, Dan Green, develops a sudden interest in Ce and his whereabouts.

The morning after the party, one of the busts, that of Justin Timberlake, is missing the head, the clock that was at its wrist is found around Shep's private part, a paint from Albright's gallery is missing as well, and Ce and Dan have to resolve a mystery... the missing artworks? Well that too, but mostly they have to find a way to make their budding relationship works. True, they are on the right path, since Ce's family likes Dan, once they went over the fact he is/was a cop and apparently not all businesses of the Romano family is 100% legal, and you know that if you want to conquer and Italian lad, you have to pass through his family.

The novel is fast paced, so fast that you cannot really miss a word, otherwise you risk to not grasp the full concept of the sentence. Or maybe that was the result of Ce being a little incoherent, thoughts were swirling in his mind like confetti during carnival, and sometime I was still following one confetti from the sky to the ground, while Ce was already jumping on another wagon.

It is a wonderful introduction to poetry

I purchased the 2nd edition in order to get the version of the book that I studied in middle school, 50+ years ago. It is a wonderful introduction to poetry, but I can see in retrospect that the book also implanted those poems in my concsiousness and they have remained with me all these years. It is a good book even for an adult to read and understand poetry better.

Used an earlier edition of this book in college! Firm clear explanations! As a personal trainer I find myself using it more to dispel physiological myths that are so pervasive in my field.

Good book

I purchased this book due to the class I was taking and I can personally say it is one of the best physiology books i have ever referenced. While I heard some complaints from classmates, I personally felt that the book was presented very well. This will stay in my library until a newer edition is available.

Messy, unreliable, overstretches its own field with nonscientific claims.

I find that this book is not very easy to read as well as having many typos and other grammatical errors, but that's not the worst of it. I have taken other science classes such as chemistry, biology, and physics that use reliable textbooks and that were taught from seasoned professors, so reading from this book for my required Exercise Physiology course has been a nightmare. This book is not strongly-based with scientific evidence, contradicts itself on several accounts, is full of redundancies, and is laid out in a convoluted mess.
