About the Author

Dr. Michael D. Johnson spent most of his youth in the fields and forests of rural Washington, observing nature. He earned his B.S. degree in zoology from Washington State University and then moved east to earn a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. After completing a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Harvard Medical School he joined the faculty of West Virginia University, where he remained for most of his career.

In 2001, Dr. Johnson moved to the Middle East, where he served first as the founding dean of Oman Medical College in the Sultanate of Oman and then as associate dean for premedical education at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. In both positions, he directed the premedical education of students from more than 25 countries. He returned to the United States in 2011 to focus on his writing.

Dr. Johnson received several teaching awards during his career, including the West Virginia University Foundation Outstanding Teacher award and the Distinguished Teacher Award of the School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, the National Association of Biology Teachers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Whether teaching undergraduates or medical students, Dr. Johnson has always had a keen interest in instilling in students an appreciation of science. He seeks to show students how the advancement of scientific knowledge sometimes raises unforeseen ethical, political, economic, and social issues for all of us to discuss and solve. Through this book, he encourages students to become scientifically literate so that they will feel comfortable making responsible choices as consumers of science.

Disappointing

Be prepared to be disappointed. I don't know who has been writing these reviews but this is a single paperback book. It is NOT a "box set" but is merely a single paperback book with pages that look like a term paper typed on a typewriter that have been bound together with a cover. The "Mastery" section is (amazingly) only a repeat of the first section (half) of the book and instead of providing any details it merely says to consult the internet. Can be read entirely in one sitting. Way, way, way overpriced.

Not a "boxed set"....a "boxed set" implies 2 books! This is one small book with a total of 105 pages and no pictures! Worth $10 at best...a rip off at over $17! I bought it because is was a newly written book and I thought there would be 2 books with at least 100 pages each and at least some pictures. Did not even bother to read it. Just returned it to purchase a book worth the money I am paying!

To much wrong with his books. First off the author has no clue what Cannabis is. Talks about how cannabis and marijuana are different plant types (wrong. Cannabis and marijuana is the same thing. Some like to call it one or the other, but it's still the same thing.). Secondly the information the author presents I feel has been fished from marijuana websites/forums. Lastly it has been very poorly written, presented, and missing tons of info. This is no more than a scam to get you to buy his junk and to sign to his website. Don't bother wasting your time!

Gr. 4-7. Nancy Drew gets an update--sort of. True, she's now using computers instead of driving a roadster, and the text is now written in the first person, but neither the writing nor the plotting screams twenty-first century. In Trace, there are two mysteries. The first--Who is stealing or bashing the neighborhood's zucchini crop?--will hardly have kids on the edge of their seats. The second, about a stolen Faberge egg, has slightly more bang for its buck because several teenage boys from France come with it, but it still has lines like "I thought American detectives were old gruff men, like Humphrey Bogart." Bogie isn't exactly a middle-grade icon. In Race, Nancy, the captain of the Biking for Bucks charity road race, has to find the stolen bucks. Kids love mysteries, and there is a shortage of them, so these offerings, for slightly younger kids than the last Nancy series, will find fans, but as with so many series titles, the writing here is stilted and the characters generic. Try Wendelin Van Draanen's Sammy Keyes books for mysteries with more substance as well as better style. Ilene Cooper

Mixed Feelings...

I remember when I read my first Nancy Drew book over twenty years ago. I had just started third grade. My mother, who had read all of the original texts as a child, was the one to recommend the books to me. I went to the library and checked out "The Clue of the Tapping Heels" - and I was instantly hooked! For the next few years I read every Nancy Drew book I could get my hands on. Even when I hit junior high I would still pull my old books out and re-read them for the hundredth time (although I never admitted this to my friends!). I still have all of books from my childhood, and over the years I've added many more to my collection.
So of course when I heard about the new series coming out, I had to run out and get the books. My reaction? I think kids who have never read Nancy Drew before will enjoy them. The stories are easy to read, and Nancy and her friends seem like pretty cool role models for younger readers.
But I have to say that as a die hard Nancy fan, adults who grew up with the classic hardcover series will probably be a little disappointed with this new series. So far, all of the mysteries take place locally in River Heights. In the original series, my favorite stories were the ones in which Nancy took off to some far away place like Hawaii or Scotland. Also, the myteries themselves seem a lot simpler in this new series. I just can't picture the old Nancy Drew tracking down a zucchini vandal! And the biggest disappointment of all to me? The characters! I know that these new books are trying to make the original characters more realistic and give them more depth, but I had the opposite reaction to them. Ned seems about the same, and George appears to be a more modern version of her old self, but I just can't picture the still ultra-femine Bess with a carpenter's license or working underneath the hood of a car. And Nancy? The old Nancy Drew would NEVER run out of gas because she forgot to check the tank! She used to be the most athletic, coordinated, and graceful girl on the planet - how did she manage to trip on a smashed zucchini and knock herself out?
Although the old Nancy didn't pay as much attention to fashion as Bess, she always had the perfect outfit on for every situation. Bess was constanly complimenting Nancy on her looks, not telling Nancy what colors would be best for her to wear! I know the new Nancy is supposed to be human, hence the changes, but in my opinion it was Nancy's original "perfect" character that held all the charm for me. She was exactly who I wanted to be when I grew up!
I think it was because my expectations were so high that I didn't enjoy the books as much as I thought I would. But I'm sure there are many people out there who would disagree with me. This series doesn't begin to compare to the original Nancy Drew series, but new readers (and old readers with a more open mind than mine!) may soon have a new favorite on hand!

Without a Trace by Carolyn Keene is part of a pretty dumb run off series from the original Nancy Drew. In the book Nancy is in high school or college, it isn't really clear. However she seems like a third grader! The book was childish and pretty boring. Nothing like the original series. The story was that someone was smashing zucchini in Nancy's neighborhood (????) and a valuable Faberge egg was stolen from a newcomer in town. Of course Nancy solved both mysteries. (...) The characters were not at all well developed and the storyline was pretty dumb. I mean seriously... smashed zucchini? This book may be good for younger kids.

Bland, lacks the spark of the original series

Without A Trace is an inauspicious beginning to the "All New Girl Detective" series. Firstly and most importantly, the problem is Nancy herself. In the original series, she was feisty, intelligent, loyal, rich, fashionable, and thoughtful. I give these people credit for trying to perserve these qualities (as other spin-off series have not) but it didn't work. In trying to make Nancy more human, they've lost her appeal. She used to be every girl's dream for growing up. Now she's just another fictitious detective, not as smart as most.
The first-person narrative is dull reading, and makes Nancy sound dull-witted. The people tried to make her human through the first-person and by making her a "casual" dresser, slightly klutzy forgetful. A beginning reader could probably understand most of the book, including the two simple mysteries. The first-person does distinguish the series from "Nancy Drew Files" and "Nancy Drew On Campus," but it is just boring.
The plot tension is lame, too. The only things at stake in the novel are neighborly relations over a couple of vandalized vegetables and a new neighbor's loss of a valuable Faberge egg. The solutions to both mysteries are gimmicky and lacking in the genius of the originals.
Bess, George, and Ned have lost their personalities too. Bess is a girly girl--and then, in a random, vain stab at avoiding stereotype, she is also an auto mechanic. George is an internet junkie, in an attempt to modernize the characters, and Ned is a warmhearted, bland doormat with no romantic tension at all.
However, the book had a few good points: Nancy is still helpful and polite, volunteering at the animal shelter on the weekends and now driving a hybrid car. The writers have stayed closer to the Nancy we love than the "Nancy Drew On Campus" series, which turned her into a brat. There are a few amusing moments. The book is wholesome, easy to understand, and may be entertaining for younger readers.
However, older readers will realize that Nancy has lost her class and her sparkle. Real Nancy fans are better off rereading original series.

He is a writer, teacher, philosopher, reporter, consultant, and a professor at the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. Still Important

I have been working on my MBA, based on the nonprofit management track. The class I was taking on board management was not really challenging me, so I looked for something that might be applicable for the class as a supplement to what we were reading (the book for that class wasn’t bad, it was just that I had already read it).

So I came across this. Drucker is a name in management, and that he had written on nonprofits was reason enough to grab it up and see what made him a name.

Overall, I was not disappointed. The book is in a format that made it easy to read bit by bit even if it made it easy to put down. It is divided in sections and Drucker has his own section, but he also brings in people who are working in the field to interview and for me these are the places of most learning. Drucker is able to look at the people he is talking to and make amazing syncretic insights that seem self-evident but really are not.

It is a bit dated. The book sprang from a tape series, so there is this weird disconnect where in the book he is referring to the tapes and that was not elided in editing. Who knows what tapes are now, right? But as someone who is working in the nonprofit field, there is nothing that sticks out as irrelevant to the world of the third sector in the second decade of the twenty-first century. What Drucker excels in is aphorisms. Meaning that you will want to pull the page out and highlight a sentence and put it on you wall. Forget looking at the sentence level, since it it a coherent whole that confronts you, and must be reckoned with.

Classic Drucker on Nonprofit Management

Originally a series of interviews (available as an audio book), this book is a transcript of the audio/interviews. I bought it so that I could find quotes quicker for presentations since I work with a capacity-building nonprofit that supports other nonprofit organizations. If you've been working in the nonprofit sector, it won't give you much new information. What it does do is provide classic "Drucker-esque" quotes and approaches to standard nonprofit problems like aligning processes around a nonprofit's mission, leadership and management within nonprofits, and reinforces values that nonprofits often struggle with -- like maintaining a steady improvement/evaluation process for programs. Half of the book (and audio version too) is Peter Drucker interviewing established nonprofit leaders on various aspects of their leadership approaches, and while those conversations shed light on certain nonprofit dilemmas, what works in the audio falls short in print. These sections are in the voice of other nonprofit leaders, and therefore missing the Drucker voice upon which we've come to rely.

Excellent Nonprofit Management Book - Even in 2016

I have to confess, when I saw this 1990 book on my graduate course's syllabus, I rolled my eyes. For the life of me, I could not figure out why it would be there. I could never have been more wrong. Timeless wisdom for nonprofit management. Even though interviews in the book are dated, their substance is impressive.

This is an excellent book to add to your library.

The best to date!

Having read all the available literature on Slipknot I can wholeheartedly recommend this title as being in a class of its own. It is cleverly written, very informative and most importantly a ...good read! It is clear that of all the biographers this author is the only one who actually knows the band and so can provide genuine insight into their lives,music and history. Do not be misled by the 'pretty' pictures in the other titles available (as I was!) this book is the only one that credits us readers as having anything more than the intelligence of a wilting cabbage leaf!

Okay, but missing a lot.

After reading this book, I found myself asking many questions about the band. That is because the Author didn't do a good enough job in his research.

Slipknot, therefore, remains somewhat of a mystery. There is really not a lot known about these guys. Considering the lack of information available on this band, I guess this book is worth reading. But honestly, you might be better off waiting for a more extensive book, which hopefully, someone will write in the future.

More importantly, is the fact that this book was written at a time when Iowa was being recorded. Since we're almost in the year 2013, and since Slipknot has released two more studio albums since Iowa, this book is extremely outdated.

This book is definitely only worth reading if you're a hard-core Slipknot fanatic.

great view of great beginnings

I'm late to the Slipknot world so it's interesting to see how it all happened and this author, who is obviously a fan, still was able to show the true side of the artists and the world they emerged from. I was a California transplant living in southern Iowa while they were getting started and I found the tales of the early days quite entertaining! I sure wish I would have found this side of Des Moines! I might not have left! But the guys I knew who grew up in Iowa were a lot like them, they had the same anger and spent their lives listening to metal and hoping for an escape from a life with little promise. Thanks for great introduction to the madness that has become one of my favorite bands!

Paul Gilbert has over twenty years of experience treating depressed people. He is Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Derby and Head of Specialty, Adult Mental Health for the Southern Derbyshire Mental Health Trust.

Every depressed or insecure person should read this book - and I should know.

I know the guidelines asks us not to comment on other reviews but I signed up to write a review specifically because I was afraid the last review might turn off someone like me who really could benefit from reading this excellent book. I don't know why the last review mischaracterized the book - I wonder if she's got the right book, because she doesn't mention a single thing about what this book is entirely about: recognizing the negative leaps in logic that we make that bring us down. It's very rational and well-thought out and it's the first thing that's given me any hope in a very long time. It's all about normal mental habits and trying to break them when they aren't helping us. Warm milk? Naps? If they're in there somewhere, I must have missed them. I don't know what that person has against this book but it sounds like they didn't read it.

The book's author seems to understand a lot about what it's like to be depressed, much more than any of my clueless therapists ever have. The first thing I saw from it is that most of my depression and sadness isn't a result of what happens to me - it's a result of my *reactions* to what happens to me, and the conclusions I draw from them without questioning. I don't know how this sounds to someone who hasn't read it, I know I'm usually really skeptical about things, but this book really helped me, and nothing else ever has.

I was thumbing through this book in the store, and the example that convinced me to buy the book goes something like this... Let's say you're expecting a phone call from a friend/lover and they don't call. Your line of thought might go something like this:

"He/she hasn't phoned.

This is because he/she has forgotten about me.

Maybe he/she had better or more fun things to do.

If he/she cared about me, he/she would have phoned.

Therefore, he/she doesn't really care.

I don't ever seem to be able to find someone who cares about me.

What's wrong with me?

Maybe I am just too boring and unattractive.

I'll never have a good, long-lasting relationship.

I'll always end up abandoned.

Life is completely pointless and empty."

Well, I saw that, and I said, omigod, that's ME... 20 years of medication and therapy and nobody ever pointed out to me that I do that. I take one possibly negative thing, and make a quick cascade of negative conclusions about it, and those conclusions get me down, maybe more so than whatever set them off in the first place. It's almost subconscious but I see it now, it's not the person not calling that's getting me down - it's me doing it to myself!

And that's just the starting point. It's in the introductory first part of the book's three parts. For the rest of the book he has specific exercises aand concrete suggestions to help you see exactly where you habitually do things to bring yourself down worse than you would be otherwise. Hey, maybe life really *does* suck - but that doesn't mean you have to make it even worse for yourself. And that's sure what I was doing.

After 20 years of chronic depression, with no help from medication or therapy (and I've been through a LOT of both) this book was the first time I ever saw light on the horizon. I'm far from being free of depression, but for the first time since I was 14 it at least seems possible. I strongly recommend checking it out.

So, if any of this sounds at all like you, here's what I think you should do... Ignore what total strangers on some website say. I hope Amazon will allow me to say something like this on their website, because I'm saying it in the hope it will help someone like me... But what you should do is go to your local bookstores, find a copy of this book and thumb through it yourself just to see, then if you decide you want it, come back and and order it from Amazon! But please, don't let that one weird review dissuade you from checking it out. I highly recommend it. I found it completely amazing, I'm really glad I found it, it's the first thing that's helped give me hope in a very long time.

A resource book to keep at your bedside.

I have been suffering from depression for many years,unaware of my own self destructive thoughts. Mr Gilbert is a god send. He approaches the subject very compassionately and set me on the road to a heathier way of thinking. Any time I start to feel that "black dog of depression" bite at my heels, I pick up this book to refresh my skills in logical healthy thinking. I have reread this book so many times the cover is wearing out.
My advice is don't just read it once.

Great book if you are depressed and skeptical

This book treats the reader very well. He acknowledges the problem of getting started with a program to overcome depression, and even suggests which chapters to skip if you want to get going quickly. Mr. Gilbert never talks down to the reader. For its focus on practical results and its thoughtfully organized, compassionate approach to the reader, I say this book is a cut above all others I've seen and a great thing to have if you would like to overcome depression. If you are depressed, then you will know that many writings on this subject speak an alien language that makes it clear that the author doesn't really understand depressed people. This book is the opposite of that. It anticipates your skepticisms and doubts in a straightforward way that are incredibly useful in keeping your mind applied to the goal of overcoming depression.
