Deeper Than the Title Suggests.
By Morris Reese
This 184 year old book is an eye opener. The arguments against slavery, against removal of Black freedman from the U.S., and against subjugation of Blacks explain how we arrived at the present state of racial tension in the U.S. Frederick Douglass' s repeated references to William Lloyd Garrison led me to this book. The hardback copy is welcomed in that , writings of such monumental impact deserve placement in a curio if possible. It is hard to harbor hate of groups when great individuals like WLG waged such powerful war of thought against wrong for the benefit of a race not his own. There must be other good people like this. Allow the author to unveil the thought that saved a nation then and can save us now. M. From GA.

From Family to Crew is the true account of Dr. James Ellingford and his family as they embark on a remarkable journey with Pendana, a beautiful vessel designed for open-ocean cruising that is docked in beautiful Bobbin Head, Broken Bay, approximately twenty nautical miles north of Sydney, Australia. Ellingford and his wife have owned several boats over the course of their lives, but none so impressive and capable as Pendana, a Nordhavn 62. The doctor and his family purchased the boat and decided to write about their experiences over the first year of ownership, feeling that it would have been helpful for them if such a book was available at the time that they decided to buy Pendana. From Family to Crew shows anyone interested in voyaging with their families that it may be challenging at times yet absolutely possible for a couple with no real hands-on knowledge or experience of crossing oceans, to successfully own and operate such a sophisticated vessel. Ellingford’s account of his adventurous first year holds nothing back, offering brutal honesty about the myriad of challenges he and his family worked hard to overcome. Many obvious aspects of boat ownership are thoroughly covered, along with others that one might not even think of before purchasing such a boat. Ellingford’s story is all the more compelling given the aspect of his family’s role in the maintenance and use of Pendana. While there are many stories about a man alone with his vessel, the presence of a wife and children gives the book a much more interesting and unusual twist that will appeal to a wide range of readers. How will they deal with the usual pressures of family life compounded with the notoriously difficult life at sea? How will the doctor and his wife learn how to confidently operate the boat enough to justify its purchase? Learn the answers to these questions and more in this exhilarating firsthand account of life with Pendana.

About the Author
Dr. James A. Ellingford is a retired corporate executive who loves to continually challenge both himself and his family. He and his wife have both grown up loving the ocean and boats and have owned many vessels together over the years. None have been so impressive and daunting as Pendana. Ellingford calls Pendana a “real step up” for his family in terms of size and equipment and not so much a boat as a “way of life.” He is fortunate enough to be able to dock Pendana in beautiful Bobbin Head Broken Bay, just north of Sydney, Australia. For more on Pendana and the Ellingford family’s incredible first year of ownership, please visit www.pendana.net and www.pendanablog.com.

Insightful and practical!
By Rachael Payne
This is a story about a man and his family buying a boat and the ups and downs they faced in the first year of using it.
If you aren't that technically minded then this is the book for you. And myself, not knowing much technical information, found this book to be insightful and full of informative things that I didn't know or even consider, such as weather monitoring five days before you set off anywhere!
It contains useful knowledge of a practical nature, in particular the medical kits and medical information and costs of running and maintaining the boat.
It shows both the good and bad parts about your first year of owning a Nordhavn 62, with parts breaking and learning actually how to pilot the boat.
I enjoyed the pictures but thought maybe a few more schematics could have been used to show what was being described about the boat and where it was.
It's written comically and with a light hearted feel to make for an enjoyable read of one family's adventure on their new Nordhavn boat.
And there are some nice bits of trivia at the end.

From Family to Crew to Experience to Entertaining!
By Claudia Jackson
From "Family to Crew" was a very enjoyable fast-paced read that I did not want to end! The story documents the author's first year of experience with his Nordhavn 62, "Pendana," a motor yacht designed to circumnavigate the globe.

The author has a wonderful sense of humor and does a great job connecting to the reader. I was especially impressed that not only did he allow his wife to maneuver the vessel but he also encouraged her to do so!

Anyone who enjoys the subject of boats or cruising can benefit from reading "From Family to Crew." It doesn't matter whether or not you are an experienced yachtsman; there is always something new to be learned from a good book.

I look forward to more from this author. In the meantime, I will be reading his blog posts and viewing his YouTube videos about his adventures aboard "Pendana." Quite entertaining!

Review
The magic of the traditional Tarot comes to life in this praise winning book by Dr. Yoav Ben-Dov: physicist, philosopher of science and the first tarot teacher in Israel (since 1979). Learn the significance of the ancient symbols which are common to old and new decks, how to conduct the reading session, and how to look at the cards in order to see the complete picture.winner of the 2013 Tarosophists award Book of the Year (self published)

From the Author
what's in the book:

  • Tarot history - first centuries, French and English schools, the New Age.
  • Session dynamics - theory and practice. Shuffling, spreading and interacting with the querent.
  • How to read - looking at the cards and considering the complete picture, rather than using fixed interpretations. This is the "Open Reading" approach, which can be applied to any type of cards.
  • The symbolic language - suggested meanings for colors, numbers, types of figures...
  • Interpretations for all the 78 cards - philosophical, psychological and practical. These are based on the traditional illustrations, on historical iconography (symbols used and known in medieval and renaissance art), and on parallel symbols in other cultures or domains.
  • Numerous examples of spread interpretations.
  • Various references and explanations - modern physics (Quantum Mechanics, Chaos Theory, Thermodynamics), schools of philosophy (Pythagorean, Aristotelian, Neo-Platonist, Alchemical, Hindu, Chinese..), saints and gods (Catholic, Hindu, Greek and Roman..), Cabbalistic symbolism, Talmudic citations, and more.
  • Tables - Hebrew Letters (French and English methods), minor suit correspondences.
  • Short interpretations - a separate section at the end, for quick reference in a reading.
  • Card illustrations - featuring CBD Tarot de Marseille, a faithful reproduction of the "standard" traditional Tarot. As this was the basis of (almost) all the decks in use today, the book can help you understand the deep significance of cards in other decks as well.
More details, card pictures in full color, and additional materials to read and download are available at the website cbdtarot.com.

From the Back Cover
The object of this book is threefold. First, a general introduction to the Tarot cards. Second, a practical guide to the "Open Reading" method, focusing on the look and feel of the cards rather than on fixed interpretations. Third, a detailed handbook for the classic version of the Tarot deck, the Tarot de Marseille. Whether you are a novice or an experienced Tarot reader, and whatever deck or reading method you are now using, this book is for you.

An outstanding book on reading the Tarot de Marseille
By Teheuti
It's been a long time since I was as excited and intrigued by a new 'how-to' book on reading the Tarot. Ben-Dov describes the Tarot as a work of art, through whose details a full range of human experiences can be revealed. The book features the Marseilles Tarot deck—a deck that's gaining greater interest and appreciation among English-speaking Tarotists. [Additionally, Ben-Dov has created what I believe to be the most elegant restoration of the classic Conver Marseille deck available, The CBD Tarot de Marseille, which process aided him in his close attention to detail in the cards.[

What has been notably missing in English Tarot literature are good, non-Waite-based meanings for the four suits. You need look no further. The focus here is on reading the cards through the scenarios one perceives when looking at the images. For the Majors, Ben-Dov says the possibilities are open. Nevertheless, he points out valuable interpretive perspectives derived from symbolic, historical and mythological associations, many of which I found both original and obvious (once-stated)—in other words, extremely helpful as kick-starter phrases for the cards. Through comparison and contrast among the Majors he shows how the cards can relate to one another. Emphasis is on the therapeutic approach, rather than being predictive or proscriptive. Providing an excellent introduction to practical reading issues, he stresses developing familiarity with psychological practices.

Previous authors offered one of three approaches to the Marseille Minor pip cards: 1) a straightforward transfer of the Waite-Smith Minor Arcana meanings to the Marseille deck, 2) a memorized set of meanings often derived from Etteilla, or 3) a personal synthesis of number-plus-suit meanings for each card. Ben-Dov bases his sensible Minor Arcana explications on the work of Alejandro Jodorowsky, emphasizing visual cues in the cards along with number, which make their arrangements 'sensible,' and easy to learn and build on. His descriptions of the thematic progression within the Major and Minor suits provide an immediate handle on each segment of the deck. In keeping with his therapeutic approach, the Court Cards represent attitudes and characteristics of the querent rather than other people, although there's nothing to stop you from applying them to others. I only wish that Ben-Dov had included sample readings utilizing the Minors like he did for the Majors, as his examples were so insightful.

Spreads are kept simple with some innovative approaches to working with both Major and Minor suit cards that are well-worth trying out. His simple instructions for creating your own spreads gives you an infinite palette of deeply meaningful options to choose from.

I have two pet peeves: Ben-Dov completely ignores the first two hundred years of Tarot's history when he describes the Marseille Tarot as the 'genuine model', with the 'true order' for the cards, saying it offers, "the most faithful and accurate representation of the ancient Tarot symbols." The oldest decks (15th century Italian) are quite different in style, and there were several different orders for the cards in its first century. It would be better to describe the Marseille-style decks as the most long-lasting, consistent design, which is not to be scoffed at. My second pet peeve involves misunderstandings of the Golden Dawn system of Tarot reading, resulting in minor errors that are not centrally relevant to this work. Personally, I think he should have left out his few Golden Dawn references or listed the differences in an appendix.

Overall, this book offers fresh, practical instructions for reading the Marseille Tarot that will give you a great appreciation for the details and special characteristics of this deck, as well as great insights into the reading process itself.

Open Reading = Up and Reading
By enrique enriquez
Anybody who has shuffled Yoav Ben Dov's tarot de Marseille feels at home. The images are crisp and gentle. The deck slips around with an ease that mirrors the flow of the symbolic universe, or perhaps, like a mirror where the symbolic universe flows.

Feeling at home in a house of mirrors is an image I would like to keep in mind while reading Yoav 's book: Tarot, The Open Reading. Tarot books are like amusement parks: we enter them knowing exactly what we will find while secretly hoping to be surprised. Yoav's book delivers the thrill of the familiar while packing the bang of a few surprises. The eternal beginner gets to ride the Bumper Cars of tarot's history and the Mechanical Bull of tarot meanings. Those who suffer from vertigo can take it slow and go around in the Carousel of court cards or take a spin in the Teacups of pips. Yoav takes both the French and the English traditions through a Tunnel of Love inviting us to peek at their (rather incestuous) hanky panky.

The main ride is, of course, the Marseille Tarot itself by means of what Yoav calls the "Open Reading", a Reverse Bungee whose admission ticked reads "everything is a symbol". This is Yoav's way of telling us to hang onto our hats. The symbolic universe sweeps us off our feet way before the cards come out of the box. This is a palatable idea for those of us who feed from abstractions. As every part of our bodies becomes arcane, every gesture we make with them can be interpreted.

Through the open reading the tarot becomes infinite. Yoav accomplishes this without cracking any eggs. His voice is always kind, always patient. To us it may seem as if this book accompanies his tarot when in truth he restored the tarots to accompany his book. After years of work to make it whole we now have access to Yoav's vision.

Three good reasons to buy this book
By Matteo
After reading dozens of books on the subject – or should I say, lists of random meanings and rituals spiced up with rambling new age-ish gibberish- some people might feel like giving up on studying tarot, unless, of course, they find the right book to read. I honestly think there are very few books on tarot that are worth their price, and Mr. Ben Dov’s The Open Reading is one of those. Since much has been said in the previous reviews, I will just list my three good reasons to buy the book:

- An anti-dogmatic and compelling approach
While some chapters of the book are devoted to finding the possible meanings of each card, this is done in order to introduce the reader to the author’s method of understanding tarot. But, as a matter of fact, there is no such a thing as an absolutly “correct” meaning. This is not to say that it’s unimportant that a card shows up instead of another one just because the same thing could be signified by different spreads: quite the contrary, as we are invited to think why that card showed up, without having some self-proclaimed guru think and feel on our behalf. Reading this book is about mastering a (good) method, not our memory skills.

- A deep and fun way of enhancing one’s intuition, creativity, awareness
One might feel that Ben Dov’s method ultimately leads to total chaos. However, by stating that “everything is a sign”, the author exhorts us to pay special attention to our feelings and intuitions and trust them. Of course, previous knowledge and careful study of the deck is needed (e.g. knowing that the page of swords is left-handed before getting to read for someone else might really help), but while it is always good to have some ready-to-use meanings in case we run low on inspiration (it’ll be another sign, after all), most of the work is done when we are able to relate to the spread, which means we can understand our own reaction to the cards.

- It “works” with every deck
I tend to be very picky when it comes to tarot decks, and I’m a Marseilles guy as a rule. The Open Reading was specifically written for the author’s lovely restoration of Conver’s Tarot of Marseilles (which can be bought on his website). However, Ben Dov’s book could prove very helpful even to those who prefer reading on a Rider Waite, or Wirth, or Italian style deck. In fact, as I mentioned above, this book is not about learning meanings: it’s about learning how tarot cards could mean something.

The Accidental Universe: The World You Thought You Knew, by Alan Lightman

With passion and curiosity, Alan Lightman explores the emotional and philosophical questions raised by recent discoveries in science. He looks at the dialogue between science and religion; the conflict between our human desire for permanence and the impermanence of nature; the possibility that our universe is simply an accident; the manner in which modern technology has separated us from direct experience of the world; and our resistance to the view that our bodies and minds can be explained by scientific logic and laws.

Behind all of these considerations is the suggestion--at once haunting and exhilarating--that what we see and understand of the world is only a tiny piece of the extraordinary, perhaps unfathomable whole.

Guest Review of “The Accidental Universe,” by Alan Lightman

By Jon Kabat-Zinn

Jon Kabat-Zinn is the author of eight more books, including Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness and Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life.

He holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology from MIT , and is the founding executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare, and Society. He has also helped to organize dialogues between the Dalai Lama and Western scientists to promote deeper understanding of different ways of knowing and probing the nature of mind, emotions, and reality.

A Walden for our digital, cosmological, and quantum age from a modern-day Thoreau. Not since Fred Hoyle in another era (and universe) has anyone dared to cover such a sweeping domain, and no one so elegantly, so parsimoniously, and so personally. From the triumph of the Higgs boson to the underlying discomfort of multiverses, from the question of God to the erosion of embodied presence via digital self-distraction, Lightman explores with wistful irony, lyricism, and insight his relationship as a theoretical physicist, a cosmologist, a novelist, a humanist, and a human being to the ever-changing and mysterious interior and exterior universes we all inhabit, knowingly or not. Any one of these essays invites deep reflection. Together, they disturb, inform, inspire, and delight.

From Booklist
Theoretical physicist and novelist Lightman (Mr. g, 2012) presents seven elegantly provocative “universe” essays that elucidate complex scientific thought in the context of everyday experiences and concerns. In the title piece, he traces the great cosmological shakeup that has top physicists theorizing that our universe is but one of many “with wildly varying properties.” Lightman brings rigor and candor to his analysis of the coexistence of religion and science. He takes on our misperceptions about time and grapples with the “deep question” of why symmetry abounds in nature, from snowflakes to the Higgs boson. After blowing our minds with descriptions of “galaxies and stars so distant their images have taken billions of years to reach our eyes,” he wonders if we accept this realm as part of our understanding of nature. And in “The Disembodied Universe,” he considers the implications of our enchantment with the virtual cosmos at our fingertips. Ranging from ancient intuitions and calculations to today’s high-tech inquiries, Lightman celebrates our grand quest for knowledge and takes measure of the challenges our discoveries deliver. --Donna Seaman

Review

"Alan Lightman might be the only writer who can dance through not just one but seven universes in a book not much larger than a human hand.”
     —The Columbus Dispatch

"Engaging. . . . While this lively, lyrical book examines some of the major scientific thinking of our time, it also celebrates the human drive to make sense of it all."
     —Portland Press Herald

"Any reader will enjoy pondering, through well-organized and graceful prose, what can be objectively proven about the world in which we live and what remains a mystery."
     —The Boston Globe

"Lightman has an appealing humility and affection for the mysterious, and an even more attractive compassion for humans, with their short lives and big questions."
     --The Columbus Dispatch

“Lightman is one of the few physicists who can name-check the Dalai Lama, astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, Dostoevsky, and dark energy in the same work, while deftly guiding readers through discussions of modern physics and philosophy. Here he has composed a thoughtful, straightforward collection of essays that invite readers to think deeply about the world around them.”
     —Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Alan Lightman . . . has written not so much about cosmology as his title might imply but about our direct, subjective experience with it . . . . We are not observers on the outside looking in. We are on the inside too.”
     —New York Journal of Books

“This MIT physicist-turned-bestselling author is one of the nation’s top science writers, exploring the intersection of science and culture. That he used to teach physics in the morning, and creative writing in the afternoon is all the recommendation you need. . . . Lightman [is] an able and charming tour guide. . . . The Accidental Universe portrays a physicist who not only observes his environment, but interacts with it, as well.”
     —Portland Press Herald

“As he’s demonstrated in highly original novels like Einstein’s Dreams and Mr g, Alan Lightman possesses the mind of a theoretical physicist and the soul of an artist. . . . He offers intriguing glimpses of how the gulf we too often perceive between science and the rest of life might be bridged.”
     —Shelf Awareness

“Elegantly provocative. . . . Lightman celebrates our grand quest for knowledge and takes measure of the challenges our discoveries deliver.”

Our small stature in a very big place
By John L Murphy
What this MIT physicist and humanist (he holds a joint professorship, and this leads as he notes crossing his campus to some mental adjustment as he bridges the gaps) brings to familiar Big Questions is a gentle sense of wonder tempered with a scientific rigor. Both qualities are enhanced by his humility, and he accepts that we may not be able to answer what some of his colleagues anticipate as the Unified Theory that explains (after the Higgs Boson) everything. Instead, he cautions us to keep balancing in a humane (if still rational and certainly secular) approach our dual capacity of exacting and verifiable measurement and very cautious speculation.

As these linked essays show, the universe can be conceived as alternately or respectively accidental, temporary, spiritual, symmetrical, gargantuan, lawful, or disembodied. He applies his life's moments gently to enrich his lessons. I like reading books for popular audiences about cosmology, so I found Alan Lightman's style (in an advanced copy for review) engaging and accessible. He brings in his daughter's wedding on the Maine coast, his beloved pair of wingtip shoes, the amazing hexagonal symmetry of a honeycomb, or the disturbing harbinger of a world where our young appear to be wired, shut off from conversation, and online all the time. However, as his last chapter predicts, even those who try to flee the virtual realm as it takes over our physical and spiritual worlds may find themselves shut off from yet another universe now evolving.

Provocatively, Lightman compares how insignificant we are, stuck in a minor galaxy on a middling planet in a marginal status, yet we have figured out so much about the universe that surrounds us, if not the next stage, which we may never be able to discern to our satisfaction, that of multiverses. He tells us that our little worlds on a similarly infinitesimal level may elude our grasp. He imagines us as captains of a ship, up on a bridge, unable to discern fully from our perch what tumult lies below deck.

This sort of deft analogy, modest and never drawing too much attention to itself, characterizes Lightman's approach. Unlike some of his colleagues who write such essays, he keeps the math to a minimum while accentuating the verbal and visual images that he hones to remind us of the sheer amount we know now about our origins, back to the first trillionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second. But, as we cannot penetrate that first moment of the Big Bang, that too stands to teach us of our own small stature, and how much the universe, big or small in these essays, continues to keep from our eager investigation. All the same, people such as Lightman inspire us to keep asking why.

His Thinking Mirrors My Own
By Timothy Haugh
Over the years, I have read many of Professor Lightman’s books. For me, his work is a mixed bag—sometimes great, sometimes no more than adequate. It is with great pleasure, therefore, that I can report The Accidental Universe to belong in the former category. This is a wonderful book.

Most readers are likely familiar with Lightman because of his fiction: Einstein’s Dreams, Good Benito, Reunion (a personal favorite), and others. This book, however, is a work of nonfiction. It is essentially a series of short meditations on the universe by this author who is, after all, both a professor of physics and the humanities.

Meditations is the right word, I think. These brief essays each have the universe as their topic but approach it from a different aspect. Most of the titles give you a clue. “The Temporary Universe” discusses entropy and change, “The Gargantuan Universe” discusses its size with we as a speck in the vastness, and “The Symmetrical Universe” talks about—what else?—symmetry and its intellectual attractiveness (as well as the importance of the Higgs particle).

The two best sections, though, are “The Lawful Universe” and “The Spiritual Universe”. In a sense, they give the underlying themes of the book as a whole. First, there are things about the universe that are intellectually understandable. Over the centuries, the scope of the things that we understand—that we have laws about—has widened considerably, as our conception of the universe itself has grown. (How many of us realize that it was only a hundred years ago that the brightest minds on earth considered the “universe” to consist of a static Milky Way galaxy?) Lightman’s scientific bent enables him to grasp our need for scientific laws quite clearly. On the other hand, Lightman’s also has another side, a contrarian side that looks at the universe differently, and this also comes through.

For lack of a better term, this is his “spiritual” side which is the second strong undercurrent in these pages. Though he remains basically atheist himself, he realizes the importance and the power of faith. I try to strike this balance myself and I find his thinking runs very close to mine. He certainly has the best words to say to the militant atheists I’ve read so far: “As a scientist, I find Dawkins’s efforts to rebut these two arguments for the existence of God—Intelligent Design and morality—completely convincing. However, as I think he would acknowledge, falsifying the arguments put forward to support a proposition does not falsify the proposition. Science can never know what created our universe…The belief or disbelief in such a Being is a matter of faith.” He goes on to say (after more kind words about Dawkins and his accomplishments): “What troubles me about Dawkins’s pronouncements is his wholesale dismissal of religion and religious sensibility…In my opinion, Dawkins has a narrow view of faith and of people. I would be the first to challenge any belief that contradicts the findings of science. But, as I have said earlier, there are things we believe in that do not submit to the methods of science” (p. 49 – 51). I have quoted this rather extensively but, as one who follows these arguments rather closely, I think Lightman has hit it on the head here. (Others, I know, will disagree.)

In the end, I was impressed by Lightman’s thinking here. He expounds easily on matters of science both historical and current. He also obviously considers the meanings of things deeply and speaks well on the subject. I recommend this highly to anyone interested in science and faith.

The Poetic Universe
By Apocryphile
Alan Lightman has a gift for lyrical, even poetic prose, as he ponders some of the biggest questions of existence in these collected essays. One is immediately struck by the fact that although a physicist and securely grounded in the real world, the author is able to temporarily transcend these boundaries and speculate on metaphysical, even spiritual, matters within the pages of this book.

As a scientist first and foremost, however, he finds it difficult to scale too high a philosophical ladder. Although he is willing to speculate on the larger questions such as consciousness, the meaning of existence, and the origins of our universe, he is still securely tethered to the "real" world of what our senses and their instrumental extensions can tell us. Though he states that he has no patience for people like Richard Dawkins who try to "prove" that God does not exist, he himself identifies as an atheist who has no patience for people who disregard the importance of the scientific method in seeking the truth. As a scientist, necessarily operating within the scientific paradigm and worldview, he is perhaps unable to lift these spectacles, if only to temporarily look at the world differently.

As the title of the book indicates, Lightman subscribes to the anthropic argument as the best explanation for why our universe is so amenable to life. This hypothesis is a valid and logically consistent one, but I think it is precisely here where the author makes his own unstated leap of faith. One of the hallmarks of a good scientific theory is not only how well it fits the facts, but if it accomplishes this in a parsimonious manner with the fewest assumptions possible. As he himself says, the only other logical possibility is that a creator of some sort is responsible, but the multiverse idea itself is obviously very far from a parsimonious explanation.

That this anthropic scenario must be invoked to avoid a creator is perhaps the best indication that cosmology has hit a brick wall. The best support so far for the multiverse comes from the close agreement of the observed microwave background radiation left over from the Big Bang with the theory of inflation. Since one necessary byproduct of inflation is the multiverse – it naturally “falls out” of the theory – many cosmologists are now beginning to seriously consider it. The multiverse is also consistent with quantum mechanics from a theoretical angle (the “many worlds” conjecture), and so also has this pillar of modern science backing it up - but this, needless to say, makes it no less strange.

What we are left with are two equally radical options – God or the Multiverse – and neither is more elegant than the other from a standpoint of economy. This is where I think the author’s professed atheism makes no sense. To state simply that one believes God does not exist isn’t any more useful than saying he does exist - from a scientific standpoint there isn’t enough evidence yet to make either claim. There is also the question of how far mathematics, and logic itself, can be applied here. In an infinite multiverse where every possibility is realized somewhere infinitely many times, one must still assume that the quantum laws, or at least the laws of probability, are valid across the multiverse and underlie everything. At the end of the universe, as I think the author himself would acknowledge, we are still left with awe and mystery.

Review
“Jacking into the Matrix Franchise: Cultural Reception and Interpretation [is] a collection of meaty essays on The Matrix’s cultural meaning. Hailing from a range of scholarly disciplines, the contributors speak to the innumerable interpretations the films have inspired. This collection’s strength is that it doesn’t try to tell you that the Matrix films are good or bad movies. The writers are as interested in the films’ failures as in their innovations, and in the opportunities they offer to take the measure of the American mind. They ask intriguing questions. I came away from Jacking convinced that the Matrix films are more than action flicks. By provoking such passionate and thoughtful responses, from academics and water-cooler philosophers alike, the series has embodied the cyborg dreams, the fears and desires, of Americans at the turn of the millennium. And that’s something worth reading about.” – The Boston Phoenix, 9/11/04 (Susannah Mandel)

“Any book under the editorial leadership of Professor William Doty is an event. His authority insures that the articles have intellectual density and academic weight. Yet, what is much rarer in this kind of publication, is a style that will captivate anybody interested in understanding how we experience and interpret films. The discussion is fascinating, the ideas fresh, the bibliographies precious. The title: Jacking into the Matrix Franchise: Cultural Reception and Interpretation, is too restrictive as it may appear like it is only addressed to fans of the Matrix films (of which I am not). But the collection of articles offers much more: it is a grand tour of all the subjects that matter in film studies: gender and degenderization, race and multiraciality, evolving and contradictory definitions of male and female heroism, religious symbolism in an entertainment culture, hidden agendas and embedded political values, postmodern deconstruction and reconstruction of hope, archetypal characters showing up unannounced, the opposition of an old in the new market of spiritual values and moreI am one of those who, twenty some years ago, immensely enjoyed Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation (1981). Doty and Kapell’s collection of articles are the best update on the subject I have read since. I am ready to bet my copy of Bound (another Wachowski brother’s movie), that Doty and Kapell’s collection of articles will become a classic in film studies. I think of Bound as the best film ever made about trust (as well as a superb thriller); it did not attract the fame of the Matrix, and reading Jacking into the matrix Franchise help me understand why.” - Ginette Paris, PhD. Pacifica Graduate Institute, Spring Journal 2004

“Two things distinguish this useful mapping of the Wachowski brothers’ Matrix film trilogy… First, its range of contributors… second, the editors’ insistence on conversational writing makes for an uncommon accessibility…. Recommended.” –Choice, January 2005 (CHOICE)

Superb writing, accessible and insightful
By A Customer
This is unquestionably the best quality book in a field crowded with poseurs and worse. See particularly the essays by Wilhelm & Kapell, John Shelton Lawrence, Flannery-Dailey & Wagner, and Mizelle & Baker. Accessibly written, enlightening, intellectually stimulating, with touches of humor that delight and intrigue, this book is worth every penny. The primary editor, Kapell, along with the highly competent Dr. Doty, have selected papers which are reflexive, more than capably developed, and multi-faceted in their approaches to the Matrix franchise. Enjoy this literate and worthy book!

A Good Read
By A Customer
Jacking In to the Matrix Franchise is the red pill that makes us understand the world of the Matrix in ways we could not while we were immersed in it, since the volume's essays serve as a comprehensive look into the Matrix franchise, not just the film trilogy composed by The Matrix, The Matrix: Reloaded, and The Matrix: Revolutions. For the Matrix directors, Andy and Larry Wachowski, orchestrated an array of artistic endeavors, including a collection of short anime stories entitled The Animatrix, the video game Enter The Matrix and the The Matrix comics as alternative texts that provide background or side narratives to Reloaded and Revolutions. In the Fall of 2004, the Matrix saga will continue in the form of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, The Matrix Online.
As co-editor William G. Doty claims in the introduction, Jacking In situates the franchise in the context of "the history of thought"-from Romanticism to Postmodernism and the posthuman-and in the context of cinema. Accordingly, the volume is multidisciplinary in scope, though it remains firmly set in the humanities and social sciences, as shown by the authors' credentials: Religion and Culture, Comparative Ethnic Studies, English, Philosophy, History, Anthropology...
Besides Doty's introduction, other highlights of Jacking In include John Shelton Lawrence's reading of the film trilogy as a fascist narrative, and Frances Flannery-Dailey and Rachel L. Wagner's analysis of the franchise's problematic connection of violence and religious themes.
Jacking In also includes a useful appendix with a glossary of names and terms used in the franchise, plus a collection of internet sites by theme and a short bibliography of recommended readings.

The ONLY book on the Matrix you need
By Phil
This is far and away the best work on the Matrix films. It is the only one that covers the entire franchise; the films, the games, the pop culture aspects. Doty's introduction is amazing, while the other chapters manage to cover just about every aspect of the series you can imagine.

Highly useful for anyone interested in figuring out which colored pill to take.
