Well-thought-out and witty analysis of what ails us!

This book is about the glut of stuff in our lives and how we're sold it, as well as why it's not making us any happier. McKevitt - a marketing expert and (on the evidence of this, anyway) contrarian - writes with wit and wisdom, mixing personal anecdotes from his family and workplace with in-depth research. It all ticks along quite nicely, with McKevitt pulling back the curtain and showing us why everything from music to football (English) to education, journalism and job-hunting has been mortally wounded by the perpetual-motion machine of what he terms the 'Everything Now' culture - until, by the end, you come away a more enlightened (and hopefully slightly less credulous) consumer. Though focused almost exclusively on British culture, the points he makes are just as salient in the US, or any other advanced consumer culture, for that matter. Recommended.

A fun app, and now a fun comic suitable for kids and kids at heart

'Angry Birds Comics Volume 1: Welcome to the Flock' proved two things to me. First, you can make a decent comic out of characters from an app, and second, that Paul Tobin can write anything, and he does it well.

The birds are trying to protect their eggs. The pigs are trying to steal the eggs. The birds fly over to the pigs village to keep the pigs from having time to steal the eggs. That's pretty much the premise of the game. The pigs are pretty dumb, but some of the birds are too. When Bomb Bird gets the hiccups, he keeps blowing up anything around himself. Another story has the pigs trying to brainwash the birds with candy and propaganda to make them doubt each other. My favorite might have been the pigs building a theme park that had a lot in common with a certain California based theme park. There are other stories. There is even, I think, a flip comic that runs along the bottom pages of the book, but in a review electronic copy, it's a bit hard to flip the pages fast enough.

It's all perfectly great fun for kids, which is great, since I learned how to play the game from my, then, 4 year old niece. Rather than being one-note like the game, it felt more like the old Coyote/Roadrunner cartoons. I hope there are more. This was fun.

Pretty good considering

That’s right, the game 90% of people play while on the crapper has become a comic – and a surprisingly decent one too!

IDW have gone about the potentially godawful enterprise of adapting Angry Birds the game into a comic by hiring two excellent writers, Jeff Parker (Batman ’66) and Paul Tobin (Bandette), both of whom have created some wonderful all-ages comics (particularly Tobin’s Marvel Heroes work).

Together they craft some short and simple stories for the Angry Birds to have while the Pigs try to steal their eggs. An elaborate theme park, Piggyland, keeps the Birds occupied while the Pigs raid their nests; candy and cartoons attempt to subvert the Birds’ friendships; a weather machine takes on the Birds; and fashion grips the Pigs as the search for the best wig is on!

These are comics aimed at younger readers AND it’s based on a video game so expect the most straightforward, uncomplicated stories with the simplest characterisations. They’re very broad comics that I’m sure the target audience of kids will like – older readers though? Ehhhhhh, no!

That said, I read this out of curiosity to see how exactly Angry Birds becomes a comic at all, given that there’s absolutely no narrative in the game, and I think Parker and Tobin did a fine job building what they did out of what little they had. And it’s certainly more readable than Tobin’s other game-related comic, the coma-inducing Plants Vs Zombies: Lawnmageddon.

Is it an amazing comic? No, it’s Angry Birds, it was never going to be amazing! But it’s also not terrible either and fans of the game, especially younger readers, will find an ok collection of short comics in this volume.

My 7 year old is a HUGE Angry Birds fan and he absolutely LOVES this book! We've already ordered volume 2 and pre-ordered volume 3. He's had us read it to him, he's been reading it to himself and he's even sat down and drawn some of the illustrations from the comics. I highly recommend this for any kids in your family that are Angry Birds fans.

Machine learning is a major subfield in computational intelligence (also called artificial intelligence). Its main objective is to use computational methods to extract information from data. Neural network methods, generally regarded as forming the first wave of breakthrough in machine learning, became popular in the late 1980s, while kernel methods arrived in a second wave in the second half of the 1990s. This is the first single-authored textbook to give a unified treatment of machine learning methods and their applications in the environmental sciences.

Machine learning methods began to infiltrate the environmental sciences in the 1990s. Today, thanks to their powerful nonlinear modeling capability, they are no longer an exotic fringe species, as they are heavily used in satellite data processing, in general circulation models (GCM), in weather and climate prediction, air quality forecasting, analysis and modeling of environmental data, oceanographic and hydrological forecasting, ecological modeling, and in the monitoring of snow, ice and forests, etc.

This book presents machine learning methods and their applications in the environmental sciences (including satellite remote sensing, atmospheric science, climate science, oceanography, hydrology and ecology), written at a level suitable for beginning graduate students and advanced undergraduates. It is also valuable for researchers and practitioners in environmental sciences interested in applying these new methods to their own work.

Chapters 1-3, intended mainly as background material for students, cover the standard statistical methods used in environmental sciences. The machine learning methods of chapters 4-12 provide powerful nonlinear generalizations for many of these standard linear statistical methods. End-of-chapter review questions are included, allowing readers to develop their problem-solving skills and monitor their understanding of the material presented. An appendix lists websites available for downloading computer code and data sources. A resources website is available containing datasets for exercises, and additional material to keep the book completely up-to-date.

About the Author
WILLIAM W. HSIEH is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences and in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, as well as Chair of the Atmospheric Science Programme, at the University of British Columbia. He is internationally known for his pioneering work in developing and applying machine learning methods in environmental sciences. A unique textbook

This unique book introduces neural network and kernel methods to students and practitioners in the environmental sciences. It will probably be of most use to meteorologists and climatologists, as its treatment of nonlinear extensions of linear multivariate techniques such as principal component analysis, canonical correlation analysis, singular spectrum analysis, etc. -- methods that are commonly applied to large gridded datasets -- is excellent. Sections on probabilistic methods such as mixture density networks and Gaussian processes are also a welcome addition. Highly recommended.

I just love Taryn more and more with every book.

I just love Taryn more and more with every book. The premise of this book was so unique. I loved it for that alone. Then add in Presley being on a horrible blind date and running into Vance, the hottie who keeps checking her out and vice versa, and it just got even better. After being ignored by her blind date the whole time, including while being spotlighted on the kiss cam, up pops a double dare involving a kiss with Vance, who happened to be sitting beside her. Holy moly, that kiss was hot. Presley kicks her usual good girl thinking to the curb to spend some time with Vance. Smart woman! Good times ensue, along with a lot more sexy times (two words - parking garage! I think I spontaneously combusted after that scene.), and of course, feelings develop. As with any relationship, it wasn't a smooth journey. Read this book asap and find out exactly what I'm talking about. You'll thank me and want to send me flowers. I prefer books. LOL Happy reading!

Double Dare: H.O.T.

This is my first time reading Ms. Taryn Elliott’s work. Boy, did I miss out, BIG TIME! Double Dare is a fun, laugh-out-loud and sizzling read! I loved everything about it. Presley is a strong, independent and witty woman. I like the fact that she can hold her own. Just the way I like my heroines. And don’t even get me started on Vance. Oomph! The man is delicious in every sinful ways. He is an alpha with a golden heart. Dominant yet so caring and sweet at the same time. Their chemistry is instant and combustible. I had to fan myself while reading the scorching scenes. I also enjoyed their playful bantering, especially their “dare” and “double dare” challenges. They just fit well together. Within a short time span, they seem to know each other so well, as if their souls recognized each other. I highly recommend Double Dare. You won’t be disappointed. Ms. Elliott, you have earned a permanent place on my Must-Read list.

Another great read in the Dare to Love kindle world. I absolutely love Vance and Presley! From the start this story was great. I loved the bad blind date and the way these two meet and continue to go. The chair...that's all I'm saying in that! This was my first time reading Taryn Elliott and it's not going to be my last!

Psychotically good.

I was a fan of the movie and to a lesser extent, the sequels. After viewing the movie 'Hitchcock' I became curious about Bloch's original versions.
I really enjoyed all three of these stories. They were very well written and fairly quick reads.
Very cool stuff.

A cool collector's item for Psycho fans, but with one VERY unfortunate problem!

This would be the perfect way to have all 3 of Robert Bloch's PSYCHO novels on your bookshelf in one volume, except for one ridiculous oversight:

The final chapter of the original PSYCHO novel is cut off, midway through!

The last sentence of this edition's reprint of PSYCHO is: "Mother killed them. That's what he said, but it was a lie."

There is SUPPOSED to follow, from there, several more paragraphs of Norman/Mother's internal monologue culminating in one of the classic lines made famous by the film: "Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly..." But it's all missing.

So, be warned. You may want to consider purchasing the 3 novels separately instead, as they are each available cheaply.

An excellent guide to the realities of a small farm.

I have a 1946 edition of this book which my father used as a reference in supplying our family all of our food from 1948 until 1962 and a large portion of our food thereafter. I have referred to it on a regular basis since 1972. While the precise numbers for costs and quantity of production are dated, the basic principles for successful small farming are clearly elucidated. You can update the costs and quantities yourself. Some of the information on animal breeds should be updated by additional research. But the priciples are all here. The chapters on "City vs. Country Life" and "Tried and True Ways to Fail" are essential reading if you have never been involved in agriculture previously. I have many reference books, and this is one of the best...with a tattered cover and yellowed pages!

EX-Farm kid wants to go back to her roots...

I looked at every book about Farming I could get my hands on and this one came out on top. I grew up on a farm and am hoping 30 years later to buy the old homestead back. I loved the detailed diagrams and explainations. Maurice went into detail on important areas like soil types and care and feeding of soil, irrigation, even waste disposal systems. He refreshed my memory on a lot of important points and taught me some things I don't even think my father knew. If I were to ask for any changes, I wish he would have included a lot more about livestock and perhaps less about orchards and growing fruit. But all in all, it deserves 5 stars. Buy this one first!!!

Interesting book for those who would like to be more self-sufficent and gain economic independence. It was written at a time when it was more feasible to be totally self-sufficent by going back to the land. Some of it is quite detailed and would require some skills that not everyone possesses. However it has good ideas and most of the projects are easy to follow.

Think you're a prophet - read this book!

Jim W. Goll goes into a very deep study of the role and person of the prophet. In many ways this book reads like a text book but don't let that turn you off. I found this book very informative and a great book to read. It is not a fast read. Due to the textbook nature of the book there are chapters and even sections of chapters that you will want/need to chew on a bit and perhaps re-read to get the full value of it.
Goll starts with a very brief history of some prophetic movements, moves on to some characteristics of prophetic people and spends the rest of the book giving examples of prophets and how to build the gift that God has placed on the prophetic person. There is a lot of info about the blessings and pitfalls to watch out for.
I would recommend this book to every pastor and every person who has ever acted in the prophetic or believes that they have a prophetic gift.

Understanding the Challenges of being Prophetic

I enjoyed his book and his desire to see the Prophetic become more of a part of the church. Jim believes that Christians today nee the Prophetic people who passionately desire to hear God and do his will. The book has prayers to help awaken the prophetic within you. The end also has question to see if you understand the key points of the chapter. The thing that challenged me the most was the layout of the book.
For example, "Let us take an honest look at six pitfalls...... at seven pinnacles, and finally three simple guidelines..." Each Pit has multiple sub headings under it. For example, Pit #5 has the Jonah Syndrome, Mercy Points (with list of Mercy Scriptures).

The other layout challenge is based on your own personal needs and understanding the Prophetic. Some of the things that he explained I though could have been bullet points and did not need a paragraph of explanation. For example, only say what God tells you. The author explains about the importance of this in at least one paragraph. That is why I stated earlier that it depends on what you need to how much depth you need for each point the author mentions.

I found this book stimulating and challenging, it was one of the most powerful books I have read on the role of the prophetic gifting and the personal call to close intimate relationship that enables us to hear the voice of God and move. We need both, the prophetic voice so the church is not stagnant and legalistic, we need the governmental voice of the Apostle to cooperate and respond to divine purpose of God.

In 1997 Nigel Kerner first introduced the notion of aliens known as Greys coming to Earth, explaining that Greys are sophisticated biological robots created by an extraterrestrial civilization they have long since outlived. In this new book Kerner reveals that the Greys are seeking to master death by obtaining something humans possess that they do not: souls. Through the manipulation of human DNA, these aliens hope to create their own souls and, thereby, escape the entropic grip of the material universe in favor of the timeless realm of spirit.

Kerner explains that genetic manipulation by the Greys has occurred since biblical times and has led to numerous negative qualities that plague humanity, such as violence, greed, and maliciousness. Racism, he contends, was developed by the aliens to prevent their genetic experiments from being compromised by breeding with others outside their influence. Examining historical records, Kerner shows that Jesus, who represented an uncorrupted genetic line, warned his disciples about the threat posed by these alien interlopers, while Hitler, a pure product of this alien intelligence, waged genocide in an attempt to rid Earth of all those untouched by this genetic tampering. Despite the powerful grip the Greys have on humanity, Kerner says that all hope is not lost. Greys exist wholly in the material world, so if we follow the spiritual laws of reincarnation and karma, aiming for enlightenment and rising above the material--a state the Greys are unable to reach--we can free ourselves from their grasp.

Much of it rings true to me as a coherent theory of humanity’s fit in this supremely awesome universe we inhabit!

This unique book deserves a long, in-depth review… however, as I’ve no time to do it justice, I’m just going to say that this is the author’s theory of ‘life, the universe and everything’… and, at about age 60, coming from a scientific background, much of it rings true to me as a coherent theory of humanity’s fit in this supremely awesome universe we inhabit. It's a superb attempt at drawing together diverse evidence from the hard-edged sciences (eg: quantum theory, physics, astrophysics, NDE research) with the huge body of the most credible, consistent UFO information—all woven into a cogent scenario that’s both awe-inspiring and also gives cause for concern. I am now enjoying re-reading the book—thanks NK for publishing such a stimulating and very well-thought-out treatise :-)

With that in mind the author outlines their plots and subterfuges and that they definitely do not have humanity's best interest

This book is a book I will reread and reread, it is so aligned with my feeling that the ET's are not so much ET but unterdimensional and the source of the creation and fall from grace myths. With that in mind the author outlines their plots and subterfuges and that they definitely do not have humanity's best interest at heart, Forget about "space brothers" coming to help you. But learn the truth so you know what ishappening.
