Review
In 1965, a 28 year-old pastor named Robert Short turned a popular slide show he'd been presenting while working his way through seminary into a book called The Gospel According to Peanuts using Schulz's characters to explain the Christian faith. He explained that Lucy, in her headstrong impulsiveness, often represents original sin. In the Hound of Heaven chapter, Short shows how Schulz used Snoopy to stand for Christ or ideal Christians. A small Presbyterian publishing house (John Knox) published it in hopes of inspiring some Sunday-school teachers to think outside the box, and, behold, their wish was fulfilled. Over 10 million copies were sold. Thirty-five years later the publisher has issued an anniversary edition....Short demonstrates a broad and deep grasp of Scripture, theology, and popular culture, all without any of the personal narrative that dominate today's religious bestsellers. After reading Short's Gospel, I know less about him than I do about my insurance agent. His only narrative is the gospel: original sin, the wages of sin are death, sin makes us aware of our need for redemption, salvation is entirely a work of grace motivated by divine love. --From Beliefnet

About the Author
Robert L. Short is perhaps best known for his first book, The Gospel according to Peanuts, which was lauded by The New York Times Book Review as "a 'perilous experiment' that comes off and earned the "admiration and respect of Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz. An ordained Presbyterian minister, he regularly traveled and preached throughout the country, presenting programs in Christian faith and the arts at churches and colleges. His other books include Something to Believe In, The Gospel According to Dogs, and The Parables of Dr. Seuss.

Sound theology AND entertaining
By Reed Siebenthal
In contrast to an earlier reviewer, I see sound theology here. Mr. Short never says that everyone will be saved regardless of their actions or beliefs; he clearly expresses the true Gospel - that one must be saved through faith in Jesus Christ alone. With that out of the way, this is both a solid statement of the Good News of atonement through Jesus' sacrifice but also an entertaining and novel way to illustrate its principles. While some may be put off by the expressions "Good grief!" "Auuuggghhh!" and the like, they represent our reactions to life and show that we all struggle daily. Even the Apostle Paul said that he "die(d) daily" in his struggle with the sin of daily living. The late Charles Schulz (whether intentionally or not) reflects through his Peanuts gang this struggle and the joys that can be experienced if we pursue them, in our case through a true faith in Jesus Christ! God bless Charles Schulz!

"Must" reading for all Charles Schultz fans.
By Midwest Book Review
Robert Short's The Gospel According To Peanuts is a timeless classic of religious insight based on the enduring legacy of the late Charles Shultz, creator of the Peanuts newspaper comic strip. Short examines the religious content of Schultz's beloved little universe of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, and the rest to reveal, from a Christian perspective, the prophetic and theologic meanings manifested by these charming and universally known cartoon characters that became pop culture icons the whole world over. The Gospel According To Peanuts is highly recommended reading all Schultz fans and anyone who has ever noted the enduring wisdom embedded and embraced by the little folks who inhabited his daily and Sunday cartoon stories.

A convincing argument for the use of modern-day parables
By Daniel Jolley
The Gospel According to Peanuts is a truly fascinating little book filled with insight, wisdom, and the type of joy that Christians should naturally espouse. Robert L. Short certainly does not argue that every single Peanuts cartoon carries a theological message, but he offers up an amazing selection of comic strips that do in fact encapsulate a number of important Christian beliefs. He begins the book with a justification for Christians embracing the arts as a means of spreading the Gospel to those around them. The fact that Charles Schulz himself was a Christian is, in a sense, immaterial; as Short argues, Christians should embrace all manner of things which will allow them to connect with others in a subtle and less holier-than-thou manner. You can't go around beating people over the head with God and get results, no matter how good your intentions. Engage them in the arts or some other object of mutual interest, and you open up innumerable outlets for Christian witnessing. For those who would scoff at the notion of linking Christianity with comedy, Short reminds us that, to the world, Christianity is itself rather comical. It is a wonderful argument that offers up much food for thought.
In the same vein as the parables of Jesus, Short makes use of dozens of Peanuts comic strips to shed light on a clear and understandable theology, finding many illustrative parallels in the lives of the Peanuts gang. Charlie Brown, in a very real sense, represents Everyman, a jolly good fellow who is always looking for something to improve a life that is, by and large, rather miserable - he never wins, just as mankind, on its own, never wins. Charlie Brown is also prone to moments of great anxiety, a fear of nothingness and emptiness. Short's most memorable comparisons, though, are to be found in the other central characters of Peanuts. Lucy's psychiatric business represents the rather modern fad of humans looking toward psychiatry to solve their problems and to reveal to them why they are so unhappy. Then there is Linus, who tends to try to run away from his problems and finds comfort only in his blanket. In Short's hands, the Great Pumpkin becomes a symbol of popular religious sentiment - Linus says, at one point, that it doesn't really matter what you believe as long as you are sincere. Of course, the Great Pumpkin never appears. Even more interesting is Linus' attitude toward Santa Claus, for, in Short's analysis, it represents the attitude of many professed Christians toward God. As Linus expects to be rewarded by Santa for his good behavior, some Christians seem to believe that by obeying God's commandments and doing good works, God owes them a reward. You can't pretend to be good and get to heaven, Short reminds us. Eternal life is a gift from God that no man can possibly earn on his own merits.
Short also expounds upon the dual nature of God's love, illustrating his argument with comic strips featuring, for example, the positive and negative qualities of rain. He concludes by offering a brilliant analysis of the words uttered so often by Charlie Brown: "Goof grief." Because you must become lost before you can be found and seek before you can find, grief can ultimately be a good thing, thanks solely to the death and resurrection of Jesus.
I was amazed at the insights into Christianity this book delivered. Non-Christians, even the Peanuts fans amongst them, may not enjoy this book because of its tenaciously theological design and purpose, but the truths that can be found in the comic strips of Charles Schulz can very effectively serve as the individual's exposure to and understanding of Christian faith. This is a remarkable book, and its importance goes far beyond its pages. Short shows how modern art and entertainment can help redefine and improve the effectiveness of the church in spreading the message of the Gospel to all men, women, and children.

Amazing read to tap into your true desires....
By bishonencam
Fantastic sensual story of wanton latent homosexual desire.
A short but engaging tale of lustful forbidden fruit that would tap into any closeted male or male in denial of their true desires.

Also a great read for anyone into domination, withholding and/or forceful behaviour with an unexpected twist at the end.

Not a bad little story
By Gandon K
Not a bad little story, but the 'villain' seemed a little too quick to add on changes/punishments with little action from our victim for my liking, but an interesting story nonetheless.

Review

"While reading Construction Project Management, I recalled the days early in my career as an architect/engineer. The description of weekly meetings and topics covered, estimates put together first by the architect on a square foot basis and the more detailed estimates of the general and subcontractors, and checking and coordination of shop drawings all rang true to my memory of how things actually happened on the job." — William W. Campbell, Montgomery College (retired)

A good introductory overview - but a little weak on real world applications
By A Customer
This book uniquely covered the traditional construction management subjects of estimating, scheduling, control, then added preconstruction activities and project delivery methods, followed by construction law and safety. These subject, which are integrated together in the work world, are usally found in 3-4 different books.

Some additional depth, such as adding order of magnitude estimating, and estimating by assemblies, was a welcome addition.

A little more "this is how it is really done in the real world" would have been helpful.Choosing Project Success - A Guide for Building Professionals

Good exposure to a lot of basic principles
By Amazon Customer
This can give you a basic idea of what management is going to be like, and the tasks that will be necessary, but in all reality, a book isn't going to tell you how to do your job. If you have to buy this for coursework, I still don't know if I would consider buying it unless it's mandatory. Even then, you could just check it out from the library if they've got one or two on reserve. There isn't a whole lot in this book that isn't common sense, and there isn't a whole lot that will really get you anywhere if you're already a professional. I spent my money on it because I always bought all my books for my classes, but this is one of those books that I rarely opened before and I will probably never open it again.

Even if you are not a vegetarian, you will love this book!
By Yogi D
I got this book a few months ago and have been happily using it since. Kurma's recipes are extremely easy to follow and deliver great results every time. The book has recipes from all over the world - Italy, India, Thailand, China, Australia, Morocco, Greece, Turkey, America.

It is also divided into easy-to-access categories like rice dishes, pasta, entrees, vegetable dishes, snacks, pickles/ jams/ chutneys, desserts, etc. etc. And a small, but useful, thing: the book lays out flat on the table, so that you can keep it on your kitchen counter and read from it as you cook along!

The other thing the author shows you is how to 'spiritualize' the food you make and eat. It works. I can affirm that! I feel much more healthy and happy since I started making the recipes in Kurma's books and following the steps listed in the book to spiritualize the food that we eat.

Even if you are not a vegetarian, you will love to make (and eat) the recipes in this book. Buy it!

Update on July 21, 2006

My wife and I use this book all the time. As I have mentioned above, the recipes are easy to use and come out tasting delicious. Kurma's other books are also very, very good. Check out his Quick Vegetarian Cards in particular, for quick and easy to make recipes.

For me, the best features of this book are the short explanation of the authors's philosophy of vegetarian cooking (keep in mind that Hare Krishna considers cooking as an act of worship), and a two page list of suggested menus for different occasions, which is really helpful for those who spends more than 20 minutes deciding what to cook for a proper three course meal. Also impressive is the glossary section, which give an explanation of the herbs and spices you might encounter in the book.
To top it off, the book is actually a good read! Clearly this book is a labour of love.
General note: if you want to take cooking a little bit more seriously, take my advice - don't buy those 30 pages recipe booklets sitting near the supermarket counters. Spend some money and get a proper recipe book - along with good kitchen tools.

A MUST HAVE IN THE KITCHEN!!
By B. P. Blumette
I have been a vegetarian since i was born and i LOVE cooking. I have probably had this cookbook for 10 years and have used it regularly along with three other cookbooks by Kurma. I do eat dairy (organic and with no animal hormones or any other animal ingredients) but i have never eaten any meat, fish, eggs, chicken or gelatin.
If you like to eat food that actually has taste than this cookbook is an essential for your kitchen! A lot of the time people think that vegetarian food is some tasteless tofu or a little salad.....because "WHAT IN THE WORLD DOES A VEGETARIAN EAT??" I have heard that question many times. Well we eat a variety of things and this book is a great tasting way to understanding what good vegetarian food tastes like!
The spices aren't so hard to find......mostly they will come from your local indian grocery store (which are actually quite common) or even the regular grocery store and you might spend a bit to buy most of them but they last for quite a while and you will have more freedom in deciding what you are going to cook. I would say that its a little more challenging to find the ingredients for the chinese and thai dishes just because they are much more unfamiliar but never hurts to try and it will be worth it when you get to eat! Also for those of you who don't like garlic or onions or both...Kurma offers a great alternative called hing or sometimes aesfatita (which is a yellow powder spice from india)which works great.
In addition to cooking with Kurma i would recommend Yamuna's Table although i haven't spent as much time with her recipies..... i have used them and they turn out excellent as well but require more ingredients and preperation time.
I really love the carob cake.......you might be worried that 'without eggs how can you make a cake?' but it turns out perfect every time. I have to admit that i am a chocolate lover and so i use chocolate instead of carob.....but thats the beauty of these recipies.... have fun with them...improvise a little! ENJOY! I know i am!!

Its good. Its funny. Its my pick for this years best 'How to' guitar book
By mervyns
I bought this with a view to upgrading my jazz-guitar skills but discovered this book offers a whole lot more than guitar playing instruction. I am a better musician for reading it, plain and simple. Richard Niles is a masterful educator because while his approach is light-hearted, a lot of knowledge is packed into every laugh. There is a place for humour, nay a need for humour, in education, and this strikes a chord with me. Congratulations on maybe the most efficient ‘How to play guitar’ book I have yet come across. Its certainly the funniest. Recommended for all guitar players out there with room for improvement.

Everything you need to understand and play jazz (on any instrument) is in this book.
By Lauren Passarelli
From Dreaming To Gigging: Jazz Guitar in 6 Months Richard is brilliant & hilarious. Everything you need to understand and play jazz (on any instrument) is in this book. The title seems like a fantasy, but if you diligently follow his guidance, you will be improvising and expressing yourself sooner than you think. Richard is intelligent, organized and able to present a subject as deep as jazz in a step wise, make serious progress, systematic, yet artful way. He's got you covered, you will learn, you will understand, you will know. You'll be gigging in six months. Lauren Passarelli, Professor of Guitar, Berklee College of Music

I feel like I'm beginning to know what I'm doing
By Garrett Wolfe Simon
This book is a MUST have for anyone who wants to express themselves, not only on guitar, but on bass, piano, or perhaps even sitar! I've been playing professionally for half a century, and for the first time, since I cracked open this book, I feel like I'm beginning to know what I'm doing. And while I am learning to master my musical language and craft, Dr. Niles keeps me laughing. This is the most informative, easy to use, and fun music text I have ever used. My only complaint is that he didn't write it decades ago. 8 out of five stars!!!

The Astrological Foundation of the Christ Myth, Book Two - Second Edition, by Malik H Jabbar

From The Author: This is the Second Edition of the Book. The book has been extensively revised pursuant to greater clarity. We have also enlarged the book in keeping with this aim. This is Book-Two of a Four-Book series. It is my intention that each ensuing volume shall explore this subject of astrological mythology in increasing detail and greater depth. The contention advocated in this essay is that modern religion is a direct offshoot of mythology, and that mythology is, in great part, astronomy written in a mythological format. Astronomy, of course, is a science, and as with any science, the explanations, at times, may be very intricate and mathematical. Consequently, I have decided to cover this subject in four stages or volumes, with each sequential volume taking us deeper into the intrigues of astrotheology. I think that this edition is much more understandable than the First Edition, although Chapter One may be considered somewhat arcane by some. We are dealing with very complex subject matters, for which lucid explanations are, at times, difficult to transmit; however, I believe that the explications within this edition have been significantly enhanced, with markedly improved analyses and clarity. The book proves that ancient mythology was, in fact, written allegorical records of astronomical or celestial transitions, under the type of mythical deities. The History of the biblical Jesus Christ is drawn from the symbolical history of prior Sun Deities. His birth through to his death, as represented in the bible, is a symbolical representation of the annual Sun Cycle, which is given detailed explanation within this book we have correlated all of the major events in the life of the biblical Jesus with their astronomical counterparts - this symbolism is thoroughly explained, and proven within the Book. The cosmic transitions that we have correlated to the biblical life of Jesus Christ are clear and explicit. The history of the Children of Israel, in the bible, is pure symbolism also, and in various aspects parallels the basic storylines of the mythical Jesus. The fabled stories of the Old Testament carry symbolisms similar to those of the New Testament scriptures, so we have provided insights into the Old Testament allegories as well; relevant to cosmic, agricultural, and cultural symbolisms.

Review
The first step of our edification is to understand, as we have explained in Book One of this series, that ancient spiritual or religious writings were, for the most part, not literally true as presented, at face value. Our modern religions are derived from ancient mythology. The Ancients used parables, allegories, and metaphors to express and illustrate many profound philosophical, psychological, and spiritual hypotheses, and other extrapolations derived from their research, observations, experiences, intuitions, and study. This treasured historical and cultural knowledge was strategically embedded, in encrypted form, within the fabrics of their poetic and religious mythology. The prodigious task that now confronts us is to correctly translate this arcane, convoluted mythological language into our modern vernacular, so as to study and evaluate the messages contained therein, bequeathed to us by the lost and ancient cultures of history and prehistory. It is the greatest of folly to think that the ancient mythological tales were just empty stories, or morality plays, or the rhapsodies of ignorant and superstitious primitives. Mythology, or better to say, the correct interpretation of mythology is the gateway to the hidden mysteries of the ancient past. The word Mythology by definition indicates the study of Myth, but not myth in the sense of fiction but rather myth as cultural and traditional tales or fables, carried from generation to generation amongst various cultures, pregnant with historical, religious, and cultural data veiled under the type of allegories, metaphors and symbols. It (mythology) is actually the documentation of research and conclusions made by the Ancients in their quests, and preservations of knowledge concerning god concepts, the environment, medicine, astronomy, government, ethics, law, philosophy, physics, psychology or parapsychology...... The understanding that our religious beliefs are actually psychological, mental concepts, and not realities, is the true beginning of genuine spiritual awakening or enlightenment. There were in times past gods called Thor, Enki, Attis, Dionysus, Jupiter, Baal, and many, many others but these gods, as we all know, are no longer with us. There is one overriding reason that these ancient deities have not survived into our era, which is this: the human minds that conjured and/or accepted these mythical deities as real, and carried them in spirit from generation to generation inside the folds of their imaginations, likewise, are no longer with us. The same baneful fate awaits the popular monotheistic deities of today, namely Allah, Jesus, and Yahweh All of these deities are imaginary, spirit gods existing only in the minds of their adherents. We have created these god concepts in our image and likeness or as a fit for our various cultures; but be that as it may - as our cultures evolve intellectually, the demise of these fanciful deities, as presently constituted within the imagination, is certain; because they (these mythical concepts) cannot withstand the scrutiny or critiques of enlightened and rational intellects ..... the paramount function of the cryptic language of mythology is the tracking of time, the seasons, the years, the cosmic cycles; all of this is fundamental to the lasting survival of the species of Man on this planet. --Excerpts

The core of mythology is Time and Numbers, because, as was emphasized in Book One, the paramount function of the cryptic language of mythology is the tracking of time, the seasons, the years, the cosmic cycles; all of this is fundamental to the lasting survival of the species of Man on this planet. The core of mythology is Time and Numbers, because, as was emphasized in Book One, the paramount function of the cryptic language of mythology is the tracking of time, the seasons, the years, the cosmic cycles; all of this is fundamental to the lasting survival of the species of Man on this planet. If Man is to successfully and consistently secure food and shelter over extended periods of time, he must master the numbers, that is he must understand and labor within and around the courses of the malevolent cycles of nature, ------- Be that as it may, our focus, at this time, is on the numbers, and the pivotal number expressed in the verses of Matthew above is 40 (forty). This number forty represents the struggle of the Sun (son, prince) against the competing cosmic forces of the underworld that are attempting to restrain the ascent of the sun toward dominance in the upper world. This opposition of the cosmic underworld forces is allegorically expressed as attempts of Satan to cajole, woo, or tempt the sun into remaining in the underworld of plutocratic sensual riches as indicated by the biblical rendition. The significance of the number forty is clear and widespread in the bible. The Number forty is one of the most significant symbolisms used within the scriptures. The number forty represents pure symbolism and allegorically expresses the interval of time between the sun reaching certain celestial coordinates (the equinoxes), and its (sun s) tangible effect upon the climate of our planet, after reaching those coordinates. The interval is forty days, even though the biblical editors may use weeks, or years, or hours, in the text, according to the subject matter of the tale, so that the unit (description) used will fit the context of the specific fable. The interval is always referred to as a Struggle of some sort, some type of deprivation, or trial, or test. This is because of the extreme difficulty our solar sun encounters in vanquishing the winter cold from our atmosphere. After six months under the equator, the sun is now in position, when it reaches the vernal equinox on March 21, to restore warmth and moisture to the northern regions. But the victory of warmth over cold is not immediate, but rather a tug of war, back and forth, between the forces of light (warmth, salvation, reward and blessings) and darkness (cold, tempting devil, Satan). But after 40 days (from the vernal equinox of March 21 to may 1, May Day), you can rest assured that the frost won t ruin your crops. The sun is now victorious, and free of the tempting (tugging) devil of winter. This Forty refers to the Lag Time between the Sun reaching the equinoxes, to the actual Terrestrial effect on the earth, that takes about 40 days to materialize. The Spring and the Fall begin officially when the Sun crosses the Equinoxes, but the effect on the earth s weather is delayed for a period of forty days. This Period between the Sun s astronomical position and the earth s warming or cooling is a wilderness journey. The Goal or the Mount has been reached, but the effect on the earth s climate takes more time (40 days, which represents the amount of time needed for complete seasonal transition). The Ancients symbolized this period in the Wilderness, by two semi-equinoctial holidays, namely May Day that comes forty days after the Spring equinox, and Halloween which comes forty days after the Fall equinox....... --Excerpts

The origin of the popular concept of Heaven is easily identifiable. It evolved from the original scientific, astronomical mythology. Ancient Mythology was the rendering of scientific astronomy in a mythological format. Mythology symbolizes the movements of the heavenly bodies within the cosmos. Astronomy deals with charting the cycles of all the entities within the cosmos. The Prophecy that prevails in Mythology and religion is a result of this charting. Of course a Prophecy, when delivered in a personified religious format, seems to be the miraculous foretelling of human events. But, in its Original form, the Prophecy did not pertain to future human activity. The Prophecy pertained to the future movements of celestial entities. I often refer to Astrology/Mythology as Scientific, because it is absolutely that. Astrology/Mythology is based on the Science of Astronomy. To clarify my point - let us now define Science. Science Begins with Observation. The scientists seek to detect patterns, laws, and cycles in that which is being observed; in this case, the Starry Heavens. Secondly, the scientists record the patterns, laws, and cycles that they have successfully detected, from their initial observations. Thirdly, the scientists renew their observations, and compare the results of their continued studies with the records of their past observations. When the scientists are successful, in their attempts to identify consistently repetitive cycles, they then, on this basis, record their conclusions as to scientific facts. This registry of scientific conclusions then serves as a model by which scientists can accurately predict the recurrence of certain events based on their records of established cycles. The ancient astronomers consequently wrote predictions as to future motions within the cosmos based on their recorded observations. Since the astronomers/astrologers used a mythological format to record their findings, their predictions of future cycles were transformed into the prophecies of the deities, their future conquests, intrigues, wars, and defeats. So when religion evolved from mythology, the chain continued. The Predictions of the scientific astronomers and astrologers, that became the oracles of fabled deities, when recorded under mythological headings, continued as the prophecies of messengers from god, in their Religious Format. The credos, cultural, and moral values within religion were evolved from scientific mythology also. The original mythology was astronomy rendered as allegories and fables…………………… The ancients charted and recorded the movements of the celestial bodies under the Type of mythical deities and demons. They recorded the transitions of the seasons and planetary influences as the conquest and defeats of allegorical entities. In some cases, they described the transition from the upper-world (northern hemisphere) to the underworld (southern hemisphere) as a failure of the symbolical sun (chosen people/prophet/kingdom) to keep faith, or follow the commandments. They described the sojourn of the sun below the equinoxes as punishment, enslavement, or banishment in many cases. This was Astronomy rendered as mythology, and out of this mix, was begotten Astrology. And Astrology as such (that is to say as the child of Astronomy and Mythology), is the Foundation upon which modern religion has been structured. All, or the greater part, of the wars and conflicts described in the bible are allegorical representations of the constantly contending forces of nature. All, or the greater part, of the creations of kingdoms and the debasements of kingdoms or the blessing of persons and/or peoples and subsequent punishments or destructions of these Persons/Peoples/Kingdoms are allegorical representations of the transitions of the seasons, and associated cosmic interactions. --Excerpts

The Orchard: A Memoir, by Adele Crockett Robertson

The Orchard is an exquisitely beautiful and poignant memoir of a young woman's single-handed struggle to save her New England farm in the depths of the Great Depression. Recently discovered by the author's daughter, it tells the story of Adele "Kitty" Robertson, young and energetic, but unprepared by her Radcliffe education for the rigors of apple farming in those bitter times. Alone at the end of a country road, with only a Great Dane for company, plagued by debts, broken machinery, and killing frosts, Kitty revives the old orchard after years of neglect. Every day is a struggle, but every day she is also rewarded by the beauty of the world and the unexpected kindness of neighbors and hired workers.

Animated by quiet courage and simple goodness, The Orchard stands as a deeply moving celebration of decency and beauty in the midst of grim prospects and crushing poverty.

From Library Journal
Robertson, a Radcliffe graduate, left a comfortable life in Boston during the Depression to grow apples in the family orchard near Ipswich, Massachusetts, from 1932 to 1934. This remarkable woman survived near poverty; cold winters; faulty plumbing; frozen pipes; the specter of unsold, spoiled apples; and harassment from the local bank. She describes her experiences learning how to operate and repair a tractor, digging a well, packing and storing apples, and other tasks involved in running a successful orchard. The loyal workers who helped her run the farm and the university purchasing agent who bought her apples and introduced her to new clients helped make her lot bearable. In the epilog, written by her daughter, we learn that although the farm was later sold, Robertson continued to live in the house, married, and became active in the community as a shop steward, local radio reporter, historian, and journalist and did a stint in office as a selectwoman. This absorbing tale is recommended for all collections focusing on the contributions of women or American agriculture.?Irwin Weintraub, Rutgers Univ. Libs., Piscataway, N.J.

Great book
By E. Anderson
This book tells the story of Kitty Robertson, a single woman trying to keep up an apple and peach orchard to help pay the bills and avoid having the bank take over the familyhome during the Great Depression. Her work ethic is admirable. She lives in a home she can barely afford to heat, puts up with frozen and bursting pipes and learns how to manage a tractor, caustic chemicals, and a questionable group of peddlers (she used her father's target pistol).

Kitty's story of the difficulties of managing the farm moves at a quick pace, and I found myself absorbed in the telling of her story. If she had written more volumes, I'd have purchased all of them. At one point in the story, after she worked frantically to pick apples to keep them safe from a pending storm, she falls asleep in the house and wakes to find the thermometer outside reading 19 degrees below and worries that the apples stored and packed in the basement might be freezing. She slides down the basement chute in the barn around 2:30 in the morning to avoid letting in the cold air from the basement door and finds the temperature at 24 degrees. Some of the apples have frozen and have gone from $2.00 a crate to being worth no more than a dime per bushel.

Kitty's manuscript was discovered by her daughter years later, under a pile of papers and a phone book. This story seems to parallel some of what is happening with the economy of the United States now, with the foreclosure crisis and the loss of jobs. Kitty was a Radcliff graduate who gave up her job at the Hartford Museum to take over the family farm. Later, she would find herself employed at the Sylvania factory as an assembly line worker.

Kitty said, "I never felt hopeless unless I was hungry or cold or had nothing to do." She always had something to do, which made her life rich, earning her a great deal of personal and public respect from those that knew her or learned of her years later.

If I could give this one Six Stars, I would!
By Thomas Leo Ogren
The Orchard, a Memoir, is a great book. Last week I was on a long flight back to San Luis Obispo from Omaha and I had this book with me, a gift from my mom. I started reading it and totally forgot about the flight, never noticed the movie they were playing. A good number of times tears were just pouring down my face and I'd wipe them away, wondering if the people on the plane around me thought I was a bit crazy.
But I tell you, I'm crazy about this book! Honestly, I read a good deal and this is easily one of the most interesting, deepest, most powerful books I have read in years. Although true, a memoir, it reads just like a fine novel. I was so totally absorbed reading this rare gem of a find, that it was difficult to realize that the author had died some 20 years ago--she, Adele Crockett Robertson, seems so real, so full of life, so gutsy, so immediate.
Briefly, this is the story of a young girl, a smart, educated girl with a good head on her shoulders, who loses her job in the great Depression, and goes back to the family farm to try and save it from the bank. The many people in the book all come to life perfectly and there are surprises aplenty. I am a gardenwriter (author of Allergy-Free Gardening)and have farmed myself, and I appreciate what Adele went through. I would also add that this is no doubt the best picture of life during the Depression I've ever come across.
I plan to review this book every place that I can, because to my mind, this one is so good, so readable, so well worth reading, so enjoyable, so satisfying, that it completely deserves to be a best seller. Do yourself a favor and read this marvelous book!

A gripping, inspiring read
By Aspen Leaf
I picked this book up during a discouraging, lonely period in my life, and it really helped me put it all in perspective. The beautifully clean, understated writing paints a gripping picture of the enormous challenges Kitty Crockett faced and met during the Depression as she struggled to save her family's apple farm from repossession by the bank. It's a tale of true heroism. It gives a real feeling for the hardships that people faced and for the reserves of the human spirit that people drew on to endure these hardships. Can you imagine having to do grueling physical labor from sunup to sundown without having enough to eat, never being really warm in the winter, being constantly in debt, and yet getting up each day and doing what has to be done? Kitty Crockett is one of the most memorable characters I've ever met in a book.
