What governing body or organization has allowed this super unhealthy version of today's English bulldog

Has a wealth of information to read. Apparently there used to be Bulldogs and Beardogs, and till this day the fighting Bear Gardens constructed by the command of a queen are preserved. English Bulldogs looked totally different back then! Both Bear and Bulldogs were brought to North America and back in England at some point the bull baiting was outlawed and thus began the changes in looks to the old English bulldog. What's a real Pit Bull? Just a nickname applied to fighting Bulldogs against each other in the pit. Though we now have a specific breed called the American pit bull terrier, it's standard is also being fought over. Anything over the UKC definitions is not the real thing. Bear dogs are no longer around as are the Bears in England. But their blood lives on in today's big breeds. There wasn't much of a standard look, they were well breed for a purpose and health, looks didn't matter as much as function and health, which is why I criticize the AKC. Are we breeding for looks or function and health? What governing body or organization has allowed this super unhealthy version of today's English bulldog? After reading this book I believe mastiff type dogs were used as bear dogs and those mutts brought over to US soil and after some time we have an ancestor of the bear dog right here known as the American Bulldog. You make up your own mind there are many pictures to see much to read, a gruesome past but one that must be understood

A good book describing the opponents the fighting dogs faced and how they were expected to fight them. However there is little information on the breeds themselves. Excellent art work is displayed on nearly every page,and the information is reliable. I would recommend it to people interested in there dogs heritage as a fighter. I gave it 4 stars because I feel it could have been longer. Full of details it is a good book for any fighting dog owner. You'll get a complete understanding where your dog came from.
