Beautiful Language

This is a profound story, written with beautiful and imaginative language. I love this story, and the way the character develops over time.

Kudos to Mr Ledford for updating the story, making it more readable than the original, and adding footnotes to explain things that just don't happen in modern times. This update gives our high school kids the opportunity to enjoy a book that otherwise would be a chore to read.

This is a great book! It is so much easier to read than the original or any other versions I have seen. I wish it had been available when I was in college. While I just read it for fun, I think it would be a wonderful resource for college students. SILAS MARNER IN MODERN LANGUAGE

Wonderful reading

I just completed reading this classic work and loved the adaptation to a modern and readable english. The original Silas Marner is one of the books I avoided reading, in part due to the chore that plowing through old english can be. Mr. Ledford did a praise-worthy job of keeping the wonderful story of Silas' life intact, while at the same time using language that is immensely more enjoyable to read than the original. I highly recommend this to all of you who have avoided this classic work.

ANTHONY M. PAVIO, PHD, is the Manager of the Phoenix Design Center for Rockwell Collins, which is focused on the development of advanced high-density military products. He was previously the manager of Integrated RF Ceramics Center for Motorola Labs, specializing in the development of highly integrated LTCC modules. Dr. Pavio was also a technical director of the microwave products division of Texas Instruments.

Vendelin, Pavio & Rohde -- Accept no substitutes!

We used this book as well as Dr. Maas's in grad school. I own both, but through the years this is the more well-thumbed of the two.

I think this volume is more oriented toward the circuit designer, while Maas is aimed more toward underlying engineering analysis... but who really needs to worry about arcane non-linear analysis, e.g. Volterra series analysis these days, anyhow?

I'd get both if you can, but if not this is *the one*.

Thoughtful and well-researched

Far From the Tree is a TOME. I mean, it's a great big, heavy book in every sense of the word. To be honest, I was a little intimidated when my copy arrived! I didn't read it cover to cover, but started with the autism chapter because it was relevant to our family. I found it to be a very well-researched, sensitive look at how autism can affect a parent's life, hopes, and perceptions.

That chapter was so good, I moved to the crime chapter and stayed up way too late because I could not put it down. Thank you, Mr. Solomon for pointing out the absurdities in our justice system when it comes to dealing with juvenile crime. (And as for the reviewer who questioned including crime at all, this book focuses on any possible way that a child can turn out different than their parents expected, and being guilty of a crime definitely seems appropriate to me.) I learned a lot from this chapter, and was particularly fascinated by the Klebolds' story. Once again, Soloman wrote with sensitivity about a very difficult and controversial topic.

From there I read the chapter on dwarfism, and then finally turned to the first pages of the book and started reading the beginning! I wanted to learn about how families deal with a diagnosis of autism; instead I learned about how families deal with all kinds of unexpected outcomes, how resilient parents can be when faced with hardships, and how connected are the identities of parents and their children. As a parent, I understand the constant struggle to balance who we want our children to be and who they actually are. "There is no such thing as reproduction" may be my new mantra.

One more thing: in 700 pages (okay, I admit, I didn't read the Acknowledgments) I never found an example of "martyrdom" that one reviewer complained about. The book relates honest responses from parents in the trenches. Parenting isn't always fun, even for parents of kids who have no extra challenges. But Far From the Tree isn't a chronicle of long-suffering devastated parents; there are plenty of positive, hopeful, make-the-best-of-it moments as well.

It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in parenting, psychology, or the history of disability. Highly recommended.

Will resonate through your lifetime

A book he was born to write. This is a 900 page book, 700 of which are reading pages, the rest notes and index.
It is a rational and helpful thesis and there is research quoted. But most of the book is based upon very thorough and careful interviews which lead you to wonder about the depths of the mystery of being human and of consciousness, and about the depths of compassion that "ordinary" people develop when they have an "extraordinary" challenge. Yoga teachers are often saying, "Open your heart." Well, this book does.

Andrew Solomon is an excellent writer. Even with medical and forensic research information being shared, he is very clear. It is not always easy to read, emotionally or intellectually. Lots of concentration is required BUT that said, it is like going to grad school for pleasure....the deep pleasure of learning and thinking because you want to.

Even if our own challenges from our "vertical" family are just the average ones, the ability to perceive and validate "horizontal" identity in others is an important insight we all can work with....even with 'temporary' ones like "teenager.'

Every physician, every educator should "have to" read it. May it become an undergraduate classic. May many many people read it now out of interest and in the interest of awareness, of their neighbors challenges. If we are more open to understanding in these ways, we won't have so much to fear (and shun). This book deserves all its awards but more importantly it deserves to be widely read, and for a long time. May it be translated into many languages, so we all have another shared language to explore answers to the fundamental an important questions extraordinary people bring to the lives of families and communities.

Probably one of the most substantial and provocative books I have ever read! It's about people who have begotten "different" children and what those children are like. More importantly, it discusses at length what haveing those children does to the parents, sibs, economics, extended family and society in general. Slow read as I found myself haveing to put the book down and think about what I had just read. This author is always brilliant. Would strongly suggest his whole body of work.

Dr. Michael Quinten works as Head of Research and Development Sensors at FRT GmbH in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. Having obtained his diploma degree and Ph. D. in physics (1989) at the University of Saarland, Saarbruecken, Germany, he joined the Technical University RWTH Aachen in 1990 to work as a physics fessor. He then spent four years at several universities in Graz (Austria), Chemnitz, Aachen, Saarbruecken and Bochum (Germany). During his academic career, he authored 50 scientific publications on optical properties of nanoparticles, nanoparticle materials, and aerosols. In 2001, he joined the ETA-Optik GmbH, Germany, where he first worked in research and development of integrated optics components, and later became a product manager in the Colour and Coatings Division. During this period, he became expert in optical layer thickness determination. In 2007, he moved to FRT GmbH where he is responsible for the optical sensor technology division. It is crazy that this book should be out of print. What are publishers thinking of? The verses are a delight, though they become increasingly tragic as the book progresses - "The Sea Bell" is a devastating account of something like clinical depression, yet like many of the rest it has a strange beauty. On the surface much is easy-to-read verse, but often has subtle allusions to deep matters. Many links with "The Lord of the Rings" for those who know where to look, and, I think, an unusually personal account of Tolkien's own struggles to find beauty, wonder and enchantment in the bleak modern world - it is only coincidence that "The Sea Bell" is the only one of his major works for publication written in the first person?

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK SO MUCH. IT REMINDED ME SO MUCH OF MY HUSBANDS FAMILY. ESPECIALLY DOLLYS MOTHER. I LAUGHED , I CRIED, I GUESS YOU COULD SAY YOU RUN THE GAMBIT OF EMOTIONS WITH THIS BOOK. DOLLY'S SISTER DID A GREAT JOB. IT WAS VERY WELL WRITTEN AND I WAS SO GLAD SHE INCLUDED SOME PICTURES OF THEM AT DIFFERENT AGES. Extensively researched and illustrated. Many great synth and synthesist stories--indispensable if you're into analog.

David Abernathy has done a really amazing job. This, needless to say, will be the definitive book on Dave Smith, Sequential Circuits and the Prophet. Painstakingly researched and beautifully illustrated with many color photos. I'd spring for the paperback edition rather than the Kindle because, as the only person who hasn't given this 5 stars so far has written, the Kindle edition lacks some of the photos.

I'm going to say a little more because, as it happens, I'm a small part of the story that Abernathy tells and know many of the other musicians he mentions, owned a couple of those rare single-manual Prophet 10s (and was even crazy and ill-advised enough to do a performance with one of these amazingly unreliable early 10s with a symphony orchestra) and have known Dave Smith since he was this kid who showed up at my studio one evening with his unlikely sequencer design (the tempo range took it up into a range where it behaved like a digital oscillator!).

This book wasn't written to make money or for any other reason than just to do something --in this case tell the story of one synthesizer and everyone involved with it -- as well as it can possibly be done. That, to me, is the highest kind of action--doing something as well as it can possibly be done without any particular regard for the rewards. If you're interested in analog synths in the 70s, this is a great read. This book and Mark Vail's are the two essential histories.

I've been interested in synths since I was 15 or 16 (I started building the PAiA 2720 kit-based synth while still in high school), and remember fondling a Prophet 5 in about 1979. So this book sounded very interesting -- and it is. It's very well written and has tons of pictures of the various Sequential Circuits product as well as advertisements and the like. Even though I'm a guitar player and can barely play keyboards, I've had a number of synths over the years just to play around with, and the book has me lusting for a Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 6. This might end up being the most expensive book I've ever bought ;^) .

I've never been much of a player but have always had a technical interest in synthesizers, especially vintage analog/digital hybrid polysynths. The story of Dave Smith and Sequential is very well told here and contains enough technical detail to appeal to someone with a casual interest in synthesizer technology. The author does a great job of linking Sequential's rise and fall with the changing technology and marketplace of the time as well as its own morphing corporate culture. If you're interested in the culture, technology and business of synthesizers, this book should be very appealing.
