About the Author
Royall Tyler was born in London, England, and grew up in Massachusetts, England, Washington D.C., and Paris. He has a B.A. in Far Eastern Languages from Harvard, and an M.A. in Japanese History and Ph. D. in Japanese literature from Columbia University. He has taught Japanese language and culture at, among other places, Ohio State University, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Oslo, in Norway. Beginning in 1990, he taught at the Australian National University, in Canberra, from which he retired at the end of 2000. He will spent the American academic year 2001-02 as a Visiting Professor at Harvard.

Tyler and his wife Susan live in a rammed earth house on 100 acres in the bush about seventy miles from Canberra, where they breed alpacas as a hobby. Royall Tyler’s previous works include Japanese Noh Dramas, a selection and translation of Noh plays published by Penguin; Japanese Tales and French Folktales, anthologies published by Pantheon; and The Miracles of the Kasuga Deity, a study of a medieval Japanese cult published by Columbia University Press.

Profound yet accessible

As previous reviewers have observed, Royall Tyler's scholarship is always top-notch, and his efforts in "Japanese No Dramas" are no exception. Yet equally impressive in this volume is the translator's ability to so richly present the depth of the No theater in clear, concise introductory essays that preface each play while locating them within a broader historical and literary context. This feature makes the text perfect for casual readers and devoted students alike. Tyler's general introduction to the No provides a solid theoretical background for complete beginners, explaining the foundations of the art, its prevalent symbolism and themes, and text- and performance-related terminology, while the aforementioned play-specific introductions offer perceptive critical analyses that follow and expand upon current Japanese No scholarship. Also worth mentioning in this respect are the footnotes. As readers of Tyler's "The Tale of Genji" translation will recall, the author supplies a great deal of explanatory notes to the text, both clarifying less-than-obvious intended meanings and pointing out references to other works. Since intertextuality forms such a vital aspect of classical Japanese literature, Tyler's decision to document each allusion proves invaluable for readers who are familiar with Japanese canonical texts or who seek to better appreciate the literary resonance of certain recurrent images and phrases. Furthermore, considering that a few of the No plays featured in this collection are nearly impossible to understand without basic knowledge of their social, religious, or historical background, readers will find themselves most grateful for Tyler's eminently helpful (yet never intrusive) explanations.

Of course, as impressive as the scholarship is here, it would mean little if the translations of the selected plays were substandard. Thankfully this is by no means the case. Tyler's renderings of each work compare favorably with the various other translations I've stumbled across, and the language he has chosen is simple yet elegant--doubtless an apt reflection of the No theater itself. As Tyler explains, although No is essentially a performance art and as such must be experienced live to be fully grasped, this certainly does not deprive the texts of their literary value. The poetry of "Matsukaze" alone is enough to convince one of this fact, and several other plays are equally lyrical and profound in their expression.

On a personal note, I have never been fortunate enough to attend an actual performance (which are rather difficult to find outside Japan), and my interest in the No is a product of reading volumes such as this; and yet, in spite of such apparent limitations, I can claim that multiple No plays rank among the greatest literature I have ever studied. Surely Royall Tyler's fine translations and careful attention to detail are in large part responsible for this occurrence. Five stars without hesitation.

Noh Comparison

The significance and effect of Noh drama is roughly equivalent to that of the plays of the great tragedians of ancient Greece. Noh combines the spiritual influences of the Buddhist and Shinto religions and the Japanese flair for densely woven, yet elegantly simple, verse in haunting allegories of enlightenment. Every detail, from set construction to the ritual motions of the actors on stage, heightens the poignancy of the plots. While the text of many of the plays are only a few pages long; a performance of a Noh play can last several hours. These plays are not only touching and intensely spiritual, but also provide a valuable resource for westerners who want to understand the roots of Japanese culture.

Good research material

Tyler is known as an authority on Japanese Literature and this volume serves an excellent introduction to No drama which is quite philosophical and religious in background. Tyler includes several plays which are interesting from both an academic and asthetic viewpoint. I would like to make the suggestion to readers to look up some of Tyler's academic papers in titles such as "The Noh play Matsukaze as a transformation of Genji Monogatari" in Monumenta Nipponica. You can search in Jstor.com at your university library for his articles by author. His work in academic journals is top-notch.

A Wolf's Claim - FanTasTic Book!

I loved this book it was full of humor, romance and hot hot hot mating sex! I loved Hayden and Amber, they really were perfect for each other. I loved how the setting was a Holiday Ball and I loved that Amber's mother found love again after losing her mate years ago and that her new love was Hayden's father. I highly recommend this book and this author to all I know you will enjoy them as much as I did. Be sure to pick up your copy and pick up the other books in this series as well believe me you will be glad that you did.

Alpha claims his mate

I highly recommended this book, if you like paranormal romance with lots of sex!
The story is about Hayden, the new alpha hosting the Christmas ball in hopes of finding his mate. Once Hayden identifies his mate Amber, he claims her immediately and thoroughly. Hot, hot, hot!
We are introduced to his two brothers, Gunner and Lucas. I'm excited for their stories, especially Gunner. He is in need of some love.

Part of Kindle Unlimited. Short read. Wolf Shifter series. He's an Alpha Wolf and she is a Witch. They're Mates. When fate brings them together at a Christmas Shifter ball, he takes what he wants. Gotta say this wolf is a little rough for my tastes but I enjoyed this HOT little read. No Cliffhanger.

I Can`t Think Of A Better Spanish Book Than This One.

One of the first books I ever bought to learn spanish. This book was originally written in 1955 but has been updated, revised and expanded. It really does make spanish easy to learn but you must take the time to study the book at least an hour per day. The author`s method for teaching you Spanish is very effective and impressive even by today`s standards even though it was written in the 50s. If something is good, it`s good no matter when it was made. I have read and studied many, many spanish books in my quest to become fluent and this book is the first book I would recommend to any beginner or intermediate learner and even advanced spanish students will learn plenty of spanish grammer and vocabulary here. In fact, I recently bought myself a new copy and started studying it again. I wanted to refresh myself on the lessons contained herein and I find that I am being reminded of many words and expressions that I forgot about and I am learning lots of new spanish. That`s what inspired me to write a review and tell people about this most excellent book for starting your spanish education and working your way up to fluency.

I am disappointed with the author of this book

I am disappointed with the author of this book. First of all you should illustrates a South America flag and not a Spain flag in your book. Because our phonetic is totally different. Spanish language comes from Castilian and like always people want to devaluate the European Spanish culture. We have 29 letters in our alphabet (A,B,C,CH,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,LL,M,N,Ñ,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z), each one have a different sounds. The author is using the same sound for the letter C, S and Z, big mistake. You are still using the same sound for B and V, another big mistake. Please these is so disrespectful for our culture. At least change book's cover and put a South American flag. Your cover is misleading people.

Font size has limits with the electronic version for kindle.

Text seems well planned (haven't gotten too far along yet!). I bought this for the kindle, so my review is on the electronic version of the book. The option to change font size does NOT work properly and if you make the font larger the display just runs out of sight. Changing the kindle to landscape helps a bit to get a larger view without each sentence running out of sight, but there are still limits to how big you can make the text. (Making the text larger is one of the best things about electronic formats - if your eyes are tired you can still read!) I was a bit disappointed in this, there does not seem to be any way to scroll over and see the rest of the text if you have enlarged the font (using kindle voyage). I have tried playing with options for margins and line spacing but nothing I have done allows the font to go beyond a certain size before it just cuts off the end of all the sentences of the page (instead of moving them down so you can continue reading).

Narcissistic Mothers: Proof That Monsters Do Exist

This was an excellent book. It gave me a better understanding of narcissistic personality disorder, and what children go through daily with narcissistic mothers. I'm sure all mental disorders are difficult for the family, but narcissism can be very deceiving. One minute, all seems calm and normal, and the next minute, the mother is in a rage or does something mean to embarrass or demean her children. Narcissistic mothers are not capable of loving or nurturing and their poor children go through life constantly striving to earn their mother's love. The stories are about the adult children looking back on incidents in their lives that were especially upsetting to them. Their stories are well written and heart-wrenching. Reading about their experiences helped me realize that my relationship with my own mother was pretty good. Of course, there were times when we had major disagreements, as all children do with their parents. However, I know that I was truly blessed to have a loving, supportive mother. Reading these stories helped me to appreciate that fact.

My mother wasn't just a narcissist, but she was also a psychopath. I found these stories interesting but not very in-depth and all of the mothers portrayed were addicts of some sort. The first time my mother told me she wished she had had an abortion when she got pregnant with me was a month before my 13th birthday and then many times more throughout my teenage years. It seemed that each time she found a new man to have an affair with, I became disposable, and she told me so loudly. I was not her only target and her greatest joy in life came from taking the things that people loved the most away from them. She destroyed at least two families that I know of, she destroyed several people's careers, and she left my brother and I to be sexually abused by people she knew were pedophiles. My biggest mistake was not getting away from her soon enough and by the time I was 35, she had had an affair with my husband and destroyed my family. I've spent decades in therapy and all of my therapists wonder how my brother and I lived through it all. I know I'm not the only one that has had a psychopath for a mother but the stories in this book don't measure up to really helping anyone.

I am the product of a narcissistic mother. She has done some atrocious things and has said some devastating things to me. I will be in therapy for a very long time due to the damage she has single-handedly caused. I am dealing, at 58 years old, with her newest scheme to destroy me...she will not communicate with me nor allow the father that I adore have any contact with me. I have supposedly done something she considers worse than had I murdered someone. This book helped me realize that I need to grow up and not allow someone else's behavior to destroy me any longer. If these remarkable women can do what is necessary to find away to deal with their personal narcissist, I can find a way also. I highly recommend this book to those who are suffering from the damage caused by a narcissistic mother. It is comforting to know you are not the only one...

About the Author
Michael R. Marrus is professor of history at the University of Toronto, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a regular speaker at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. An internationally renowned Holocaust scholar, Marrus is the author of five books and numerous articles on European history, including the award-winning works Vichy France and the Jews (1981, 1995), written with Robert O. Paxton, and The Holocaust in History (1987). He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, a visiting professor at UCLA, and a visiting fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies of the Hebrew University and St. Antony’s College, Oxford.

Well done,thorough but not overwhelming>

The author has done a very good job of using primary sources to tell the story of the Allied attempt to be fair when punishing the Nazi leadership. I was impressed with his ability to tell the story and allow the reader to make his or her own conclusions. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the History of the Nazis and the Worlds response after World War II.

Grand Book

This a brillant book in how it shifts through the various documents in order to make the reader fully aware of what has happened. Marrus allows for a good mixture of both procecuting and defending testimony from the Trial and the various confrences during, before and after the Trial. He gives a very good documentation of how the Allies came to teh conviction of 19 Nazis. As a historian of the Trials, I recfonmmend it to all who want to learn more of the Trials.

This is really an achievement, a readable history in so short a book on such a large complex place. The histories of Russia I've read in the past tend to be many hundreds of pages. This book would be a good place to start for someone with an interest in Russia but no time for tomes.

The several maps are reasonably good, and the few photos and other illustrations are useful for mood. I think the best chapters are Chapter 1, on the formation of Russia; Chapter 2 on the rise of Muscovy and the Mongol yoke; Chapter 4 on the Petrine revolution (that is, Peter the Great); Chapter 6 on reform and revolt (covers 1855-1905); and Chapter 7 which covers the 1905-45 period, particularly the ruthlessness of the communist regime. The last chapter is too brief, but a good summary of how the Soviet Union collapsed and Russia remains
