Bad Cover - Good Book

This book is a good case for not judging a book by its cover. At first glance it looks like some sensational rag by some conspiracy nut cases. Too bad, because this is an important and well researched book. It is one of the first I have read to examine in-depth the consequences of newest technology on humanity, especially transhumanism. Genetics, robotics, artificial intelligence and nanotechnology, called GRIN technologies in this book, are challenging our definition of what it is to be human. When does what was once human in God's image cease to even have a soul? GRIN can transform human beings into a transhuman creatures that resemble the Nephilim of the Bible, the progeny of fallen supernatural beings. Scary stuff, yet well researched and footnoted. Some parts get a little off topic (genetically modified food), but overall great. I highly recommend reading it.

It is not until page 125 that the authors actually begin to deliver on the title of the book.

The material in the remaining 168 pages is interesting and on-topic. What it is pointing to is disturbing and though it is above board it is yet flying below the radar. Meaning no secret agenda by the human race, their intentions are fully explained and gaining exceptional traction. People will not be able to accurately claim this was all a hidden conspiracy. The Satanic motivation and end game is also not secret, simply read Revelation 13 for example.

The website they steer the reader to in order to get some free books and articles on related subject matter is not user-friendly. In fact two of the books that the reader is supposed to be able to download as a PDF I was unable to locate after thirty minutes scouring page after page of items for me to purchase. I contacted the website but have not received a reply or acknowledgement of receipt of my email and that was roughly 16 hours ago.

I suggest buying the book and start on page 125.

I suggest that the author:
1. not occupy pages of a book with fluff (ex. quotes from one's own fictional work)
2. revamp your namesake website - it is not user friendly nor eye friendly. You need to decide if your message of the website is about the subject matter or selling your products. I suggest a separate site for selling your products and only have one mention/link to it on the front page of the title's namesake website. Make the subject matter the focus; documentation, sources - and do it in a manner that is friendly to the eyes.
3. Provide a bibliography of books, scholarly-vetted journal articles and news stories (a-source material) for readers to do further.(Kudos for including a notes section in your book)
4. Get to the point (the first 124 pages of filler - these pages actually had very little if anything to do with the main subject matter).

I love deep thinkers who do their research!

This is a very serious book for spiritual warriors of this day and age. It is not New Age, but exposes the tactics of the enemy. When God lifts the veil that blinds us to what is really happening in our world, it is alarming --and the depths of the rabbit hole is beyond anything we can grasp. Learn the art and warfare of prayer. This book is astonishing. My husband and I fight over reading it:) It ties things together well.

Michael J. Webb founded Sales Performance Consultants, Inc., to help business executives make their sales funnels flow faster, and is the foremost expert on sales process improvement. Sales and Six Sigma

I found this book to be insightful and helpful with implementing some of Six Sigma.

Here's the good: I liked the way that Mr. Webb gives examples of real life integration of Six Sigma into sales and marketing. I also like that he validates what I have taught for a long time; that marketing's goal is to bring in qualified, targeted prospects, not just throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks. If a company truly applies the simple parts of Six Sigma that are discussed in this book, they will find an increase in close ratios, have salespeople with better attitudes, and will probably need fewer salespeople to accomplish the same amount, or more, business.

The bad: I started to feel like I was being treated like a 2nd grade student at times. The constant "I'll discuss more on this in the next chapter, section, or paragraph", the "I talked about this back in Chapter 2, or in the last section, etc" became annoying. Anyone that picks this book up and actually reads it should be smart enough to know that they've read about it in the book earlier. Or, if it's coming up, great! But, don't tell me it's coming up in the next paragraph or section. I'll get there pretty quickly and see it myself.

Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and recommend it to others.

Data-driven Process Improvement

Sales and Marketing the Six Sigma Way is a great conceptual introduction to Six Sigma.

Six Sigma is most known as a quality control system for reducing manufacturing defects at companies such as Motorola and General Electric. This book explains how it can also be used to improve processes in marketing, sales, and customer service. The author emphasizes the importance of delivering value to both the company and the customer.

The five steps of Six Sigma are Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control (DMAIC). By analyzing data, you can identify causes of problems, and thus fix them. It's all about making decisions based on data, rather than assumptions.

Additional tools include voice of the customer, SIPOC diagrams (suppliers, inputs, process, outputs, customers), and value mapping.

The author also mentions Lean, another quality system used by Toyota. I've added The Toyota Way to my reading list.

A must reading for sales & marketing professionals

A few books were recently published which introduced the concept of six sigma to improving sales and marketing. At first I was skeptical about applying six sigma principles to these particular business functions. I, too, suspected that it is probably the latest fashion, the latest flavor of the month, but after reading this book I believe that some of the six sigma tools can indeed be usefully applied to marketing and sales processes.

The author, a black belt practitioner, argues that both sales and marketing functions must be examined as processes desperately in need of improvement. He pleads for the two functions to end their traditional "silo" mentality and "us/them" behavior; showing that six sigma tools can bring marketing and salespeople together and enable them to collaborate as one team.

Mr. Webb urges the use of the five Six Sigma steps (DMAIC), along with tools such as process maps, process measurement charts, fishbone diagrams, SIPOC diagrams, and so on--all of which help in finding (marketing), winning (sales), and keeping (customer service) existing and new customers. According to the author's website, process improvement techniques can also greatly alleviate some of the following typical problems facing marketing and sales:

- Developing and launching products that are not successful in the market because they fail to address real customer needs.
- Advertising and "brand awareness" campaigns that create no measurable customer response.
- Marketing campaigns and trade shows that generate large numbers of "leads" that do not get followed up by salespeople, and are not qualified prospects in any case.
- Salespeople chasing "anything that moves" in their territory, thus spending time selling to the wrong prospects.
- Proposal-generating activities that do not get customers to buy.
- Servicing repetitive customer complaints that could be eliminated if the product were improved, yet that information never makes its way into the requirements for new products. (Source: [...]).

There are two minor criticisms of the book: First, it tends to be too lengthy and repetitive, in fact it probably will not lose any of its main themes or messages if it is condensed to around 200 pages.
Second, most of the case studies cited in the book come from smaller companies. Although the cover of the book mentions that the author worked with large international companies such as American Express, 3M, and Marriott, the only six sigma case study from an international organization came from HSBC USA, whose managing director (a former GE executive) led the six sigma efforts at this bank.

Don't let anger control you and hurt others

One of the best and most practical books I've read for overcoming anger. Dr. Semmelroth explains that most people think there are only two alternatives to anger: Either smother it or express it, constructively or otherwise. Dr. Semmelroth teaches a third way to deal with anger and that is to see it as a "behavior that we use to solve life's problems." The Anger Habit Workbook will guide you through learning new habits without using anger. Learning alternatives to anger reduces its presence in your life.

I think we can all agree that the world would be a better place if more people could break their anger habits. Dr. Semmelroth's workbook offers the opportunity to learn new habits and overcome the anger habit

Great Title

Dr. Semmelroth has hit a homerun. I have the 2002 edition and this is what I am commenting on. I am a psychologist and do anger management training. This book is a personal favorite. Why? It's so me. It makes sense and it is practical. I did not want to reinvent the wheel and searched for ease of learning. There are basic tennants in anger management and most of the books and workbooks cover it in some form. People learn differently. Some with words, some from observation and most all from the results of doing it.

I like this book because it does "stand alone" for me. I don't know if the newer text does so. Dr. Semmelroth is my kind of guy because we learn by doing. His language is down to earth, and we do our own feedback by taking notes and reflecting upon what we have learned.

In identifying anger as a habit, it makes sense, because we all have the behaviors that comfort us. Whether they are healthy or not. Understanding it is a habit allows me to take control.

Anger has been an effective tool for me to accomplish tasks against the odds. On the other hand it can be a problem that prevents me from social interaction as well as a violation of other people's space.

When I got to lesson 5 on righteous anger, I smiled and got an Ah Ha experience. That's me! Other reviewers have found a different chapter.

My text has 13 lessons and each one has significance. Change comes through repetition of the new habits. As I tell my clients it's not what you read, it's what you do with the information.

I am always looking for ways to improve my effectiveness at work. I found it in this book. The key insight is that when you feel strong emotions - anger in particular - they can reduce your IQ by 50-70 points! Beyond that insight, the book served as a guide (over several months) to see how anger impacted my life at work and home, and to resolve some of the underlying issues. I am a better person today for having experienced this book.

Not About the Martial Art

Contrary to a previous reviewer (who appears not to have read the book), this book is not about the Chinese martial art of Pa Kua or any other style of the Chinese martial arts, and there is nothing about self-defense in the book. (I've trained in the martial art of Pa Kua, and would know.) Instead, the book is about the system (mostly for Taoist divination) of eight diagrams called the pa kua (ba gua in Pinyan romanization, literally, "eight trigrams") on which the martial art of Pa Kua are based on, which explains the confusion exhibited by the previous reviewer.

The book details how the eight trigrams figured in Chinese history, philosophy and religion, including much information about the monotheistic worship of Shang Ti, which was the original religion of China. As such, it is a good read for anyone interested in the subject. I have one caveat: the author is a good writer, but more of a mystic than a scientist or historian. Having said that, anyone interested in Chinese culture, religion and history will enjoy the book.

About the Author
Momoko Kuroda (b. 1938 in Tochigi Prefecture) is one of the most highly-respected haiku poets in Japan today. She has published five collections of haiku, and authored or co-authored another 22 prose works including essays, season- word compendiums, books on haiku for beginners, and a two-volume set of interviews with notable Showa-era poets. Her first haiku collection earned her the Modern Haiku Women award and the Haiku Association New Poet award. In 2011 she was awarded the Dakotsu prize, Japan’s most prestigious haiku award. She is a haiku selector for the Nihon Keizai Shimbun’s weekly Sunday haiku column, and a frequent haiku selector for NHK television. She is on the jury of several national and regional haiku contests, including the annual Mainichi Shimbun haiku award. In 1990, she founded her own haiku organization, AOI, with a nationwide membership of several thousand. All this she accomplished while working full-time at Hakuhodo, a Tokyo-based advertising firm, until her retirement at age 60.

Abigail Friedman, a retired diplomat and accomplished, award-winning haiku poet, began composing haiku in a haiku group that met at the foot of Mt. Fuji, led by Japanese haiku master Momoko Kuroda. Her book, The Haiku Apprentice: Memoirs of Writing Poetry in Japan (Stone Bridge Press, 2006), captures that experience and her insights into haiku. She is founder of HaikuQuebec, the first French/English bilingual haiku group in Quebec City. Her work has appeared in poetry publications in the U.S., Canada, France, and Japan, including: Frogpond; AOI; The Asahi Weekly; Association Francophone de Haiku (AFH); The Moss at Tokeiji (Deep North Press, 2010); ; and Bilboquet. She has presented her haiku at the Montreal Zen Poetry Festival, the Festival international de la poesie de Trois-Rivieres, Haiku Canada, and Haiku North America. In 2012, she was commissioned to compose a haiku to mark the U.S. gift of dogwoods to Japan, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Japan’s gift of cherry trees to the U.S. Awards and Other Honors: First Prize, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2014); Second Prize, Mainichi International Haiku Contest (2012); Grand Prize, Yamanashi Mt. Its polished layout style makes this a pretty little book. And if your
interest is in knowing about the life of Momoko Kuroda this book offers glimpses through the eyes of a friend.

But if your interest is to understand the way Kuroda writes haiku you will need to explore other translations of her verses. At least some of the verses in this book are not true to the poet's actual meaning. They have been rearranged, the kireji (cutting word) misplaced or changed, and suffused with substituted words when succinct words are available.

Fortunately, Friedman reveals a more literal translation of one of the selected verses in her commentary on the flycatcher verse [pg. 110], but the verse falls close to the end of the book, leaving the reader wondering about all that came before.

The final section shows modern-day haiku as it morphs into personal introspection with its increased frequency of the self as subject matter. With this shift the natural world seems to lose its power as the broad allegory for the cycles of human existence -- a faintly visible waning day moon.

A Resonant Life-Journey in Haiku

We think we know haiku. It's the short-short form of poetry based on seventeen syllables in a 5/7/5 line length, usually an observation of nature. It's poetry of the moment, dashed off quickly, not serious writing.

Wrong. Haiku is so much more—which is only one of the surprises in this beautiful small volume of haiku from one of Japan's most renowned poets, Momoko Kuroda, translated with insightful commentary by Abigail Friedman, a career U.S. diplomat who studied with Kuroda when Friedman lived in Japan.

Like the haiku it centers on, I Wait for the Moon cannot be summed up in simple terms. The hundred poems Friedman chooses take readers on a journey through life, writing, Japan, and the evolution of one woman's resonant writing voice.

Haiku, it turns out, are limited to 17 units, not syllables: the units are 17 sounds of Japanese Kanji, the pictorial letterforms. The line lengths are not a prescribed 5/7/5; rather they are signaled by grammatical breaks or kireji, the word that signals a "cut" or turn, a surprise in the haiku.

The point of delving into haiku form is not to mess with reader's heads, but to show the intricacy in those seventeen beats, details that make this form of poetry far more challenging and meaningful than most people realize.

Take this early Kuroda haiku:

"underground passage/ there's a wind rushing by—/ the calendar seller"

Simply a powerful observation of a moment, it seems, until Friedman comments:

"As is so often the case with haiku, it is the unstated which completes the poem. We must divine the sound of calendar pages fluttering and flapping in the wind, drawing Momoko's attention to the calendar stall. Here, everything is in motion—the poet walking through the passageway, the wind, the pages of the calendars, and time itself (the calendar being a symbol of tempus fugit)."

Friedman shows Kuroda's decades-long evolution from a classical poet of haiku, based on reporting or observation, to a poet whose haiku are deeply reflective. The changes in the poet's writing voice were sharpened by the events of March 11, 2011, when the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan struck the country's northern coast, followed by a devastating tsunami and the man-made devastation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant went into meltdown.

"deep beneath the sea/ upon those in deepest sleep/ cherry blossoms fall"

Friedman writes:

Momoko believes the triple disaster changed not only the lives of the victims, but everyone's lives. She felt that she needed to achieve a 'self-revolution.' She set about contributing to the revival and rebuilding effort through her role as a haiku selector [she was asked to encourage locals to write haiku about the events]. ... Momoko urged contributors to write about their painful experiences. As usual, an excellent presentation of haiku and the translations thereof. Ms. Friedman has spent many years in Japan and has been an assiduous student of the literary form. She is also fluent in Japanese both reading and writing the language.
